If there is one franchise where things remain most secretive, it’s the Dallas Cowboys. Jerry Jones has guided them since 1989. Just a few weeks ago, Forbes came out with the list of the world’s Top 50 most valuable sports franchises. America’s Team was on top, their 9th year in a row. That’s a colossal achievement. But there is one area where they have been most unlucky. Getting success on the gridiron. HC Mike McCarthy arrived there in 2020 and is in his last year. But the success eluded them. The talk of the football world is whether Jerry Jones will keep him or let him go.
The Athletic’s Diana Russini was asked the same question on the December 27 episode of The Herd with Colin Cowherd. To everyone’s surprise, she claimed that the head coach would get an extension and said, “Before you make a move at the head coaching position, you first take a look at who’s available right. So, when you take a look around the league, and you try to figure out who would Jerry Jones want to work with? Is there a coach out there that makes a lot of sense for the Dallas Cowboys? And then I think that’s where you get your answer. So your gut is that he sticks with McCarthy.” That’s an interesting take.

Although the Cowboys got eliminated from the playoffs, they defeated the Buccaneers in the week 16 game. For many in the league, it was a shocker. Moreover, Mike McCarthy has shown a very mature reaction in cases where players are unhappy with Jerry Jones. After losing 6-34 to the Eagles, their WR CeeDee Lamb complained about sunshine and requested to use curtains. But the head coach kept the situation cool.
He also keeps things controlled at the franchise. Additionally, both of them have a solid common ground over many things. Jerry Jones personally likes him too. And the coach has maintained his respect in the locker room. That’s also why a new coach would take time to establish.
Russini further provided more sneak peek behind her rationale and added, “I hear more and more coming out of Jerry’s mouth that tells you that he believes that Mike McCarthy can get this right. I can just tell you, though, what people around the league are saying. They think Mike McCarthy is going to be safe.” That’s a good sign. It would keep things stable at the franchise.
The Cowboys are waiting for the regular season to end. They would like to check things they have and need to succeed. In that scenario, the head coach’s role becomes more important.
Is Jerry Jones delaying HC talks for Mike McCarthy’s return?
After their win against the Bucs, the Cowboys’ owner was on cloud nine. He praised the head coach and said, “All I can say is what a good job, how good a job he’s doing. I don’t have thoughts that I would share as to anything about what we do after we’re through playing this year. We’ll decide after that.” That’s the signature Jerry Jones style. He keeps his cards close to his chest until the time of the move.

Considering his overall record, Mike McCarthy is way above other available coaches. He has won a Super Bowl and understands what it takes to win a championship. In his 5 years stint as Cowboys HC, he has taken them to playoff thrice. That’s not a simple task.

While going to meet his players after the Bucs game, Jerry Jones danced with joy. He was ecstatic. And as soon as he entered the locker room, he hugged Mike McCarthy. They had a moment of joy, which soon turned serious as Jones said something in coach’s year. He also nodded, agreeing with whatever the owner said.
It shows that they have a common plan. However, the fans are getting restless. Their last win came in 1995. Can they repeat their success after 3-decades with their current head coach in his extension? Some analysts have questioned Jones’ will to sign a contract extension with the head coach. But we’ll find out after a couple of weeks.
