The San Francisco 49ers can take a sigh of relief. They were nothing but dominant against the Seattle Seahawks (36-24) on Thursday night in a must-win game. However, despite the favorable outcome, critics hounded the 49ers QB with ample criticism. Questions like “Should he play a coverage where two players were on him?” were asked. On the contrary, there were also others who felt the QB was grossly underpaid despite consistent performances. Case in point: Brock Purdy’s true colors at Lumen Field in Week 6.
255 yards, three TDs, and no pick. This athletic performance took his team from 2 -3 to 3-3 in the regular season. And yet Purdy is still on his four-year, $3.7 million contract (he was the 262nd and final pick of the 2022 draft) with $77,008 guaranteed—0.2% of what that year’s No. 1 overall pick Trevor Walker got from the Jacksonville Jaguars. All of this despite his phenomenal rise where he’s gone 17-4 as the starter while posting a 71.4 QBR in the last two seasons—only behind Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen since the start of 2022. Purdy won his seven starts as a rookie. Last season, he led the NFL in passer rating (113), clinched a franchise record of 4,280 yards passing, and also ranked third in TD passes (31). This year, too, he sits second on the list in terms of passing yards (1,629) behind Seahawks’ Geno Smith (1,778). In terms of TDs scored, the 24-year-old sits at eighth with 6 touchdowns so far.
Thankfully, insiders already predict Purdy to be given a massive contract once his current one expires after the 2025 season. We’re talking somewhere in excess of $50 million a year. To be precise, reports state he’s set to be the highest-paid QB in history over Dak Prescott’s mega $240 million deal. And guess what? An NFL insider has some more juicy details about the looming contract. On the talk show, ‘The Herd,’ Albert Breer praised him, saying, “We’ve seen a guy who can go out and make plays on his own. You see the scramble plays, you see him churning out first downs with his legs.” Well, that’s some heavy praise for the QB.

The Monday Morning Quarterback got some inside scoop from HC Kyle Shanahan as well. The 49ers are planning to pay Purdy after the year. Breer quoted, “I think what I know is that they are planning on paying after the year. Kyle said as much to me over the summer… He said we’ve been through that before with Jimmy Garoppolo. He became the highest-paid quarterback in football.” The head coach is very impressed with the young QB’s performance. And why not? He has put his best foot forward with players like Christian McCaffrey, George Kittle, and Deebo Samuel missing games due to injuries.
Breer is not one to hold back, and he further opined, “I don’t think Brock’s gonna be Tom Brady, but I do think there’s that piece of it where a guy doesn’t live down his draft position…this guy’s a really good player and a much better player than people have given him credit.” Seems like Purdy is in good books, but is this good enough to get a contract?
Well, if he does, his teammates are going to be very happy for sure. 49ers offensive tackle Trent Williams noted last month, “Brock has, obviously, outplayed a ‘Mr. Irrelevant’ contract. So, I mean, I would be thrilled — absolutely thrilled — to not only see, but to watch his life change after something like that because he deserves it.
If there’s any great American story that you can look for in the NFL, it’s this one right here. Nobody ever thought he could do what he did. He still doesn’t look the part when you bring in the last first-round quarterbacks, you’re probably going to look at him and be like, ‘He doesn’t fit.’ But he’s better than all of them. And I think his play speaks for itself…I’m super, super proud of him, man. I love the kid to death…He deserves every dollar coming his way. I want to help him get exactly what he deserves.”
If this new info is anything to go by, Purdy will surely get what he deserves. Though he had a great game against the Seahawks, the journos still managed to hurl some difficult questions around the red zone to the HC. Well, in a typical Shanahan way, the HC tackled had some fitting answers ready.

Despite red zone troubles, Purdy’s ‘right in the corner’
Despite a dominant 36-24 win, the San Francisco 49ers had their share of struggles in the red zone. Brock Purdy too admitted them after the game. When asked about the difficult throws and the QB’s struggles, Shanahan said, “The first one was awesome. That was a long third down. We were obviously struggling in the red zone to make a big play like that. I think it was third and goal from I want to say the 10, but that was huge. It was a dime right in the corner… He went across the board and had a hell of a throw to George.” The coach wasn’t in favor of dousing his boys’ momentum.
Mr. Irrelevant is certainly on top, and he made no mistake in the Thursday game either. “I feel like we did take a step in the right direction for sure and we’re always going to be hard on ourselves and need to grow and get better at, but I really do think that we all, as a team, came together and found a way that ended really well,” Purdy said. He must have nerves of steel!
