The NFL world was bustling with the QB trades for a week now. Now, as the noise has died down a bit, the Chicago Bears have been facing criticisms for their handling of Justin Fields and his trade deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers. This led many, including Chase Daniel, to contend that the Bears “got fleeced”. Now an NFL insider comes forward to save the Bears from ridicule.

Kenny Pickett left the Steelers with the addition of Russell Wilson to the Steelers roster. A younger QB was needed to fulfill the role of understudy and Fields was chosen for that role. However, the trade looked highly unbalanced for the Bears. What is the reason for this lopsided trade?

The 25-year-old Fields was drafted by the Bears as their first pick and overall 11th pick in the NFL 2021 Draft. His skill and talents were not aptly supported on the field, hence GM Ryan Poles wanted to ‘do right by him’. However, according to many pundits, they did not end up doing right by themselves.

The Bears will be receiving a conditional sixth-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft for this trade. This pick could go up to the fourth round if Fields ends up playing 51% of the games for the Steelers. Now NFL insider, Adam Schefter clears the air regarding the trade deal.

“If the Bears had a strong offer I think they would’ve acted upon that”, said Schefter on the ‘Pat McAfee Show’. He suggested that the Bears lacked any meaningful offers for the QB from other franchises. Hence, they ended up fulfilling his wishes. “Justin Fields wanted to go to Pittsburgh and they accommodated him”, said Schefter. With Fields gone who will be the starting QB for the Bears in the upcoming season?

The sensitive QB situation for the Bears

The Bears have secured two first-round picks for the upcoming draft. They have the first overall pick as well and are reportedly targeting QB Caleb Williams for their first pick. The USC graduate has been a breakout star and could be the solution to Bears’ QB issues, according to reports.

With Fields departing, the Bears do not have a quality starter QB. Hence, the addition of an NFL-caliber QB is a must for the Bears. And all signs point to the 2022 Heisman Trophy winner Williams.
