Is benching Daniel Jones a smart move, or are the Giants just saving their wallets?

The Giants are one of the worst starters with a 2-8 record. And this week 11 bye might have been more of a reset button than a breather. You see, it seems like the Big Blue has sat down to discuss the future of QB1 Daniel Jones. Spoiler alert: it’s not looking great for DJ. Well, it does not look like he’d be a QB1 starting against the Bucs.

NFL insider Adam Schefter dropped the bomb, saying the fans expect the Giants to replace Daniel Jones with Tommy DeVito as their new starting quarterback. A shocking decision? Heck, no. It was a long time coming. But out of the blue, for sure. So, why this decision, now? Per GM Joe Schoen, this is a “football decision.” Nothing more, nothing less… Sure, but there’s more.

Albert Breer believes its hard to ignore the fine print on Jones’ $23 million injury guarantee for 2025. Now, add to it his 7 INTs to just 8 TDs already this season. Yikes! So, does this chalking off seem like a coincidence? Probably not.

So, undrafted rookie DeVito might be stepping in to steer the ship—or at least bail water—while Jones watches from the sidelines. This move doesn’t scream “next-gen QB strategy”; it’s more like a calculated punt to save some yardage.

Benching Jones now feels less about his performance and more about financial gymnastics. Although, performance has been the major downer. The Giants seem to be eyeing their cap space as much as their playbook. Why? Cutting him after this season will cost them just over $22 million in dead cap—a tough pill, sure, but way better than the $69 million it would’ve been if they’d done it earlier.

So, the decision to chalk off Jones was for a financial overhaul? Hmm… Not really.

Have an interesting take?

Is Daniel Jones out of position for good?

With every passing game, Daniel Jones losing the QB1 spot became a matter of when not if. Sooner, rather than later, this was bound to happen. Are we being harsh? Maybe, but we’d like to call it being brutally honest.

A passer rating of 79.4 (fourth worst in the league), only 8 TD passes, and 7 INTs? Those numbers scream “time for a change.” And let’s be honest, the Giants are sidestepping more than just poor play here. If Jones got seriously hurt, his injury guarantee could’ve locked them into paying him through 2025. So, they don’t want to be paying a QB1 for that kinda pay when they can pay a QB for much less… Who might surprise, but would largely yield the same result under center.

That’s where Tommy DeVito has been forced into this spotlight. But for the Big Blue they’d be getting his services at less than $1 million a year. Sure, he’s no star yet, but his rise says more about the Giants’ priorities than his potential.

And where does this leave Jones? Benched and bumped to third string, it’s clear his days in New York are numbered. Tick, Tock… Unless he pulls off a football miracle, a post-season goodbye feels inevitable.
