The quarterback situation for the Steelers is definitely on the radar! And we aren’t saying this out of the blue. They hit the ground with Russell Wilson as their starter for the season, only to get him sidelined because of a calf injury. While Justin Fields stepped up to take the reins, his injury and performance have turned the whole Steelers locker room into a fog.
With so much going on in the team, Wilson is reportedly trying his best to make a comeback during Week 6. As per senior NFL Insider Josina Anderson, a league source asked him if there’s any chance for Russell Wilson to be named the starter this week. Especially when the Steelers lost two straight games.
While Wilson returned to Wednesday’s practice in full participation, the head coach has something to say. According to Anderson’s X post, Mike Tomlin stated, “I think Russ has to have a good week of practice for it even to be a discussion…He hasn’t substantially practiced since he reinjured his calf.” While the Super Bowl Champion is burning the midnight oil to get back in the saddles, the path isn’t easy for him.

With the Steelers QB1 position hanging in the middle, it seems the Second-team All-Pro’s comeback is inevitable. Here is why!

While Russell Wilson has been off the gridiron for the season so far, he is now preparing to hit the ground running. And Steelers insider and reporter for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette has an interesting update on it. Gerry Dulac discussed in his article the inevitability of the QB getting his shot to start for the offense.
Dulac wrote, “The Steelers wanted a quarterback the other team would fear when the game is on the line, the way Tomlin feared what might happen against Prescott. Which is why, at some point soon, Tomlin will make the decision to switch to Wilson.” With the Steelers’ offense struggles, they need someone who can take charge in those high-pressure moments.

And since the pre-season, there have been concerns about the Offensive Player of the Month’s age. But here is the thing: Wilson’s got the experience, the track record, and that Super Bowl ring under his name. While he is surely a dual threat, the QB understands the opponent’s plays!
Wilson knows how to win games and manage an offense. While Fields has shown promise, Wilson’s leadership and skills could easily land him back in the starting role once he’s fully healthy. It’s really just a matter of when, not if, he makes his return. So, while Wilson returns to practice, let’s see what happens in Week 6!
