Is Jerod Mayo's leadership the real issue behind the Patriots' disastrous 1-6 start?

The Patriots have failed to win the hearts this season. It has been the total opposite. After 7 weeks, they are sitting at a 1-6 win-loss record. They started the season on a high, by winning against the Bengals. But since then, it has been defeat after defeat. Now, questions are being asked from head coach, Jerod Mayo. He said that he worked with the team for the rebuild, and now an analyst is advising the coach.

NFL reporter Albert Breer recently appeared on 98.5 The Sports Hub where he talked about the Patriots’ rebuild. He talked about the time when Jerod Mayo claimed that he wanted to focus on bigger problems at the franchise while the specialist coaches worked in their respective departments. He then also gave an alternative to the coach.

While talking about the backup or someone who could have played second fiddle with ease, Breer added, “I think he (Ron Rivera) would have been a good name. He’s been a head coach in two different places, right? He can be super helpful.” The logic seems fine. While Jerod Mayo worked on team building with a focus on improving player relationships, Ron Rivera could have helped him perfectly.

The team has been undergoing a revival since Brady and Belichick left. And Rivera has been well-versed in those types of situations. He was there when the Panthers underwent ownership change. During his sting with Commanders, he oversaw the team change their names. But it is not as easy as Breer made it seem. On the personal front, Rivera has fought cancer and emerged victorious. And he might not have accepted playing the second-coach role.

However, the Patriots can still script a comeback if the head coach takes matters seriously instead of passing the blame.

Amid Jerod Mayo’s storm, the locker room stands up for their quarterback

After the week 7 game against the Jaguars, the coach threw a subtle shade on his players. During the post-game conference, he claimed that his players were playing soft football. This stirred the hornet’s nest. Players disappeared while the fans started trolling the HC for not working hard and tossing the responsibility.

However, the locker room is standing behind their rookie quarterback Drake Maye, who has been performing comparatively well. In 2 games, he has 50 of 78 passes with 541 yards with 5 touchdowns. WR Kendrick Bourne praised Maye for still acting as the leader and urging them to not lose hope.

Even Jerod Mayo had claimed that though the signal caller’s start was encouraging, the O-line couldn’t capitalize on the opportunities. Now, the time is to act fast and win some games. Only winning can give them the confidence they need to continue in the season. Otherwise, hopes might turn to despair soon for the team.
