Are the Jets risking too much on Adams, or is this the game-changer they need?

The Jets aren’t messing around this season after sacking head coach Robert Saleh last week. They showed their willingness to go ahead and make those big decisions that could probably change the course of their season. Although getting rid of Saleh didn’t bear positive results this Sunday, the Jets are on their way to bringing in a former teammate of Aaron Rodgers in New York.

You might already know the name, as former Packers WR Davante Adams is slated to join the Jets receiving corps. While both teams are busy finalizing their blockbuster trade deal, as Dianna Russini of The Athletic shares, “I think the Jets are all in on this. They’re giving Aaron Rodgers and this offense and this team every single possible thing that they can do to try to maximize Aaron Rodgers while he’s here.”

Well, by doing so, the Jets are sending a third-round pick that could even turn into a second-round pick if certain clauses are hit. Based upon the report shared by Adam Schefter of ESPN, if Adams gets honored with a first or second-time All-Pro or finds himself on the active roster when the Jets play in the Super Bowl or any Championship game, only then will that third-round pick turn into a second-round pick.

Apart from the draft picks that are included in the deal, the Jets do have their first six rounds of next year’s draft. Adding to those picks are extra sixth-round and seventh-round, which the Chiefs still owe them. And draft picks are not the only thing that A-Rod’s team is willing to sacrifice. As they need to pay $11.59 million of the remaining base salary, the Raiders owe him $16.89 million this season.

The AAV includes approximately 66% of his total base salary for 2024—a financial commitment that, although significant, is just part of the broader implications of Adams’ contract. Over the next 2 years, if the Jets decide to keep Adams, they could face an additional $72.5 million in salary obligations, bringing the total potential financial commitment regarding his contract to around $82.5 million (when factoring in performance incentives + bonuses). But that’s not even half of the story.

Don’t forget his $35 million per year salary in 2025 and 2026 from the $140 million deal he signed with the Raiders back in 2022. The Jets have a salary cap of $261.1 million, which makes this deal possible. As for the Raiders, they would have $37.6 million in cap space alongside $46.5 million in dead money once this deal gets finalized. Meanwhile, the Jets will have $5.6 million remaining in their overall cap space after this trade. With only physical remaining, will Davante Adams bring an instant boost to the Jets season, which is heading towards yet another early exit this year?

Davante Adams joins Aaron Rodgers’ offense in New York

After only 12 hours of the Jets’ loss against the Bills in New York, they jumped into the trade deal for Davante Adams. Although it was coming sooner rather than later, the urgency to make this deal happen quicker comes from their latest defeat. This week’s loss was the Jets third in a row, which led to Rodgers describing it as “Frustrating. I’m here to win those games. But we’ve got to be on our details. It’s little things every single time.”

Well, Adams will be joining a bloated receiver room that already consists of Garrett Wilson, Mike Williams, and former Packers Allen Lazard. Among all three, Wilson had his best night yet, as the 24-year-old caught 13 catches for 101 yards while adding a TD to his name. Adams coming into the fold may lead to him receiving fewer opportunities on the front.

Soon going to be a Jets player, Davante had a record-breaking last season that saw him rack up 103 catches for 1,144 yards while putting up 8 TD catches. Even this season, he had 18 receptions for 209 yards and one TD before getting injured with a hamstring. After missing out on three games this season, it looks like his time in Las Vegas is over. But can he deliver in green and white with Rodgers throwing to him like those Green Bay days? Well, we shall soon find out as it’s reunion time in New York.
