Is Dak Prescott unfairly blamed for the Cowboys' struggles, or does he need to step up more?

Extraordinarily disappointed for our fans. We will correct this,” said Dallas Cowboys owner and GM Jerry Jones after the team’s brutal 44-19 loss against the New Orleans Saints on September 16 (Monday). Things didn’t align at all in favor of Mike McCarthy and Co. Defensively crumbled, the Cowboys were schooled by the Saints at the AT&T stadium on Monday. Their attack led by Dak Prescott tried to hold on to the game as much as they could, but failed in the end. However, after the game, NFL insider Dave Helman defended Cowboys QB for his on-field performance against the Saints.

In the latest episode of the podcast NFL on FOX, the insider lauded the 33-year-old QB. According to Helman, Prescott did as much as he could to contribute to the game. He said, “I thought Dak Prescott did a phenomenal job keeping the Cowboys in this game early. They scored points on four of their first five possessions. He did have a miscommunication with CeeDee Lamb in the end zone in the first half that could have led to the touchdown. I’m not saying he was perfect. But he did what he could until it went out of hand and he couldn’t.”

The Cowboys’ defense allowed touchdowns on the first six drives, while their offense could congregate only a single touchdown, while the major part of their most promising drives ended in a field goal. Offensively Derek Carr and Co. scored 44 points to go along with 436 yards of total offense on only 56 plays. On the other hand, the Cowboys only scored 19 points and 353 total yards on 66 plays.

New Orleans‘ Derek Carr was the star of the show and the nemesis for the Dallas defense, putting up a Jordan Love-like performance. Carr picked up 243 passing yards and a pair of touchdowns. His performance was appreciated by many, including Stephen A. Smith, who went as far as to draw parallels between the Saints QB and Pro Bowl HOFer Joe Montana. In his YouTube podcast, Smith said, “Did you know that Alvin Kamara had four touchdowns? Did you know that Derek Carr played out there like Joe Montana?”

Moving on from Carr, the Cowboys are now in a precarious situation and Prescott and team would want to avoid a defeat like this.

After a humiliating 44-19 loss against the New Orleans Saints, Dallas Cowboys QB Dak Prescott is hopeful that his team will learn from their mistakes and strengthen themselves as they delve deeper into the regular season. Talking in the post-game interview, Prescott said, “We’re gonna learn from it. That was a good team. Gotta give them credit. This is the NFL. It’s about trusting the process and responding. I know we have the guys to do that. Honestly excited to get back to work and turn this page.”

It was not an ideal performance from the 33-year-old. Especially after he signed a four-year $240 million contract with the franchise. While Prescott had 293 passing yards and a touchdown, he also had two interceptions and a fumble. His Week 1 performance against the Cleveland Browns wasn’t any different. He picked up just 179 passing yards and a touchdown.

Overall, even though the Cowboys looked all strong in Week 1, a completely different picture of the team was seen in Week 2. However, it’s still too early for the team to panic as they have a lot of time to rectify their errors. They do need to fix their leaky defense and try to get back on the winning ways, as they’ll host the Baltimore Ravens on September 22 (Sunday).
