The Eagles are a bit lucky, aren’t they? Firing one Super Bowl-winning head coach to get their hands upon another. Philadelphia just keeps on hitting the bullseye with head coaches at the helm. Who would have thought an outgoing Doug Peterson, who delivered the Eagles’ first Super Bowl, would be replaced by the man bringing them their second? Like don’t you feel everything was just written in the stars? And whatever happened in between happened for a reason.
Maybe that’s why Nick Sirianni is all set to get some handsome rewards at the end of it. Hired in 2021 on a $7M a year contract, Sirianni’s deal is all set to run out next season. He is already one of the lowest-paid head coaches in the NFL. And considering his achievements—like two Super Bowl appearances, winning one in the process, and 4 playoff berths, Sirianni surely deserves more than what he is earning right now. That’s what NFL insider Adam Schefter believes, at least.
Popping up on The Pat McAfee Show, Schefter gave a detailed breakdown of what the Eagles need to avoid with Sirianni. “I think what will happen is they’ll sit down to do the deal because Nick Sirianni is heading into the last year of his contract. You never want a head coach headed into the last year of his contract.” Well, the Eagles surely wouldn’t like to lose a head coach who is 48-20 in the regular season over his first four years.

And teams in the NFL never really like to keep their head coaches waiting for a contract extension. Leaving aside the rare case of Mike McCarthy in Dallas. You wouldn’t really see it happen often with other franchises. Just take a look at the Kansas City Chiefs. After they won their Super Bowl LVIII, the Chiefs instantly announced a contract extension for Andy Reid. And that extension till 2029 not only made Reid the highest-paid head coach in the NFL with an average annual salary of $20M. It also made him one of the highest-earning coaches in all of American sports.
Now, you can’t really blame the Chiefs for giving Reid such a deal. He deserves it, delivering 3 Super Bowls out of the 5 trips they made in the last 6 years. But Reid’s contract isn’t the concern here. One that could actually help Sirianni drive his price up lies in Chicago. Ben Johnson’s contract with the Bears is expected to help Sirianni land a huge payday with the Eagles.

Adam Schefter predicts Nick Sirianni’s next big contract extension
Schefter didn’t just warn the Eagles not to allow Sirianni to enter the final year of his initial 5-year contract. He also gave a bit of a prediction of what Sirianni’s deal could look like. But before he dug into Sirianni’s probable contract extension, Schefter pointed out how Ben Johnson’s deal with the Bears can prove to be a threshold, “Ben Johnson got $13M a year, but the other rookie coaches didn’t get that. I think the pay cycle for those guys was anywhere from $10-13M per coach. So, if you’re Nick Sirianni, and you won a Super Bowl, and you’ve got a year left…I’m sure the Eagles want to keep that number down, and Nick Sirianni is gonna want to drive that number up.”
But how much does Sirianni truly deserve? There’s no doubt he has turned the Eagles into a force to be reckoned with. Whether it’s their defense or offense, the Eagles are dominant everywhere. That’s why they were the Super Bowl Champions—and others weren’t. So, Schefter tried to play with the idea of a number that Sirianni could actually land in the next few months. “If Ben Johnson got $13M, then Nick Sirianni as a Super Bowl-winning head coach is worth more than. Right? So, what is the number? Is it going to be $14M, $15M?..But he’s going to get a new deal. They’ll redo it and we’ll see where it comes in, but obviously fully expect it to be north of Ben Johnson.”

Anything Johnson landed in Chicago without proven experience as a head coach speaks volumes of what Sirianni actually deserves. What more can you expect from someone who has already defied expectations? Right now, the sky is the limit for this Eagles team under Sirianni. And if they are really serious about Super Bowls every year. Then, keeping Nick at the helm should be their first priority.
