A couple of days ago, sports personality Jack Settleman posted on social media, leading many to believe that the “Vikings and Rams are in serious trade talks for Matthew Stafford.” Since then, with the team sitting at 2-4, chaos has erupted in the NFL world. Many are opposing the idea of trading the quarterback. So, will the Los Angeles Rams QB be traded in the middle of the season?
To address this issue, NFL insider Albert Breer joined the ‘The Herd with Colin Cowherd’ show on Wednesday. When host Cowherd asked if there is any trade for Matthew Stafford going to happen soon, the senior reporter said, “Stafford, not now. Maybe after the season. The contract is set up in a way where if the size decides it’s time to move on after the year, they can do that, so I don’t buy it over the next two weeks.” That means, according to Breer, it depends on how the rest of the year plays out. And also whether the team is looking to rebuild or make another push.
Breer further emphasized that while they haven’t decided anything yet, the Rams increased Stafford’s pay with the understanding that they might revisit his future after the season. At this point, there hasn’t been any firm decision about Stafford’s future for 2025. So, this means the QB, who signed a four-year, $160 million deal in 2022, isn’t going to be traded soon. And now this also confirms what Sean McVay earlier admitted while speaking about his relationship with Matthew Stafford.

Do you remember when in this offseason, coach Sean McVay admitted a “strong” relationship with the quarterback? Yes! It’s true. They are one of the best duos in the league. And that is evident from what McVay said in July: “What I always appreciate about our relationship is that I think that honest communication exists….The end goal is to be able to have him here leading the way, and the sooner that we can be able to find what that looks like, the better off we are, we were able to do that without it taking away from any of our preparation leading into the season.”
So, at that time, McVay expressed that the Rams would be going ahead with Matthew Stafford. And now amidst these rumors, according to Breer, there will be no change in that. The Rams will at least continue to start with Stafford until the next season, and “no,” the team isn’t moving to trade the quarterback to the Vikings. However, they and Stafford are ready to battle against them for sure!

Matthew Stafford knows the Vikings all too well – 22 games, 9 wins, and now, he’s facing a defense that’s completely transformed. Just a couple of seasons ago, Minnesota’s defense was at the bottom. But now, in this season? They’re one of the toughest in the league.
What’s your perspective on:
Is Matthew Stafford the key to turning the Rams' season around, or just a costly gamble?
Have an interesting take?
Sitting at 5-1, according to Stafford, the Vikings are “a really physical unit. Physical and fast. (Who) Try to force their hand on the offense and try to play with confidence when they do that.” In addition to that, “They’ve got a bunch of smart, savvy players in the back end…” and have a “unique” defensive scheme.
Hence, Matthew Stafford knows Thursday night won’t be easy, especially with the Rams sitting at 2-4 and struggling offensively. Adding to the pressure, defenders have sacked Stafford 17 times this season. But the Vikings rank third in sacks.

Hence, the pressure is on. A win could breathe life into the Rams’ season, but a loss? It could spell more trouble, with trade rumors swirling around Cooper Kupp already. The Rams are going to face the Vikings on Thursday, October 24 at SoFi Stadium.
