Are the Chargers' rivals kicking themselves for not hiring Harbaugh when they had the chance?

Firing Brandon Staley was probably the best decision the Los Angeles Chargers took last year. After all, if they didn’t do that, they wouldn’t have been doing so well. Of course, Jim Harbaugh is a huge reason behind the franchise’s success. But do you know the most wholesome thing about him? He makes the players feel like they are the most important people in the world.

Perhaps that’s why the LA football team felt overpowered as they made a complete mockery of Joe Burrow and his Cincinnati Bengals in the first half. The Bolts’ defense was just as fierce as Justin Herbert’s offense. The Chargers have won most of their games with two-score leads. Seeing that kind of production from Harbaugh’s team has made a lot of GMs regret the decision of not hiring him when they had the opportunity.

Don’t take it from us, though. Take it from FOX’s NFL Insider Jordan Schultz, who got a text from an NFC GM who certainly had a FOMO on not nabbing Jim Harbaugh. Per Schutz’s post on X, “Text from an NFC GM: ‘The amount of regret some teams have for not hiring Jim Harbaugh when they had the chance… It’s very real.’”

Some sources suggested that Harbaugh might have spoken to the Bears since they were the team to draft him in the NFL in the first place. But that didn’t come to fruition. However, things got crazier when the Chargers head coach helped his alma mater, Michigan, win a championship game. Everyone came flocking to hire him after that.

Around January 15, 2024, four NFC teams had a job opening for a head coach: Atlanta Falcons, Seattle Seahawks, Carolina Panthers, and the Washington Commanders. All those teams, except the Commanders, might be punching the air right now for not moving quickly on Jim Harbaugh.

Jim Harbaugh’s Chargers upset the Chargers

The Chargers’ defense only allowed the Cincinnati Bengals to score two field goals in the first half. It was unreal to see Justin Herbert throwing back-to-back touchdowns and making tight throws. The Chargers withstood the image of a team with a strong run game. And JK Dobbins added more to it, including a game-winning TD. The way he leaped into the end zone in the last quarter was hilarious.

But credit to Joe Burrow, who had one heck of a game, throwing for 356 yards and three touchdowns. Clearly, the Bengals need to do a lot more to win games. The defense clearly lacked a punch. By the end of it, the Bolts’ defense was quite heavy. This forced Joe Burrow to make hasty throws and miss Chase and Higgins multiple times.

It’s astounding to see how the Chargers blew a 21-point lead but still found a way to win the game.
