#87 seems all set to cross #88 and set a franchise record. All it needs is for Travis Kelce to be extra sharp on the gridiron and for Patrick Mahomes to be generous in targeting him. The gap between Kelce’s current stats and the record is small enough that just one pass from the 2x SB MVP will help him accomplish it.

However, apart from Kelce, Mahomes is currently spoilt for choice and is faced with the dilemma of splitting his targets between Kadarius Toney, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, and new teammate Mecole Hardman. Now, eyes remain set on how Kelce makes way to the new achievement in his own style, surpassing a legend of the game for the Chiefs.

The current record for receiving yards in the Kansas City Chiefs franchise is held by one of the greatest Tight Ends that the team has seen. Tony Gonzalez played for the Chiefs from 1997 to 2008, before switching to the Atlanta Falcons. Now, the Chiefs’ main offensive weapon, Travis Kelce, is just 14 yards shy of breaking the record. And he seems well on his way to doing it during the Dolphins game.
Harold R. Kuntz, a sports anchor for FOX News, took to X to announce the same.

Kelce currently stands at 10,940 receiving yards. The Dolphins offense may be the best in the league, but its defense sure has questions looming over its head. Will Mahomes and Kelce find a gap in their defense and connect for the record-breaking pass? Only pass stands between Kelce and Tony Gonzalez’s record.

Kelce’s performance might suffer because of Swift’s absence

As CBS Sports made it clear during their broadcast of the Broncos vs. Chiefs game: Kelce is not at his best when playing without Swift. He has averaged 106 yards per game with Swift in attendance while registering only 46.5 yards per game without her. Today, the “Taylor Effect” will be missing. Kelce will be on his own as he faces the onslaught of the Dolphins’ defense.

But, at the same time, the Dolphins offense is the best in the league right now. Its defense is not. It currently ranks 15th in the entire league. The Chiefs however are 4th in terms of defensive yards. Chiefs’ uncharacteristically strong defense will be facing the Dolphins’ strong offense. While the Chiefs’ weakened offense will be facing the Dolphins’ weak defense. Only time will tell which team will overpower the other.
