Sometimes, the more things change, the more they stay the same. Remember when we all thought Sam Darnold might have finally turned a corner with the Minnesota Vikings? Well, Sunday night’s game against the Detroit Lions served up a hefty slice of humble pie, and it tasted all too familiar. In a crushing 31-9 defeat, we witnessed what many NFL fans had been quietly (or not so quietly) anticipating—the return of the “old” Darnold. This isn’t just another story about a quarterback having a bad game; it’s about expectations, reality checks, and the brutal honesty of professional football. Let’s be honest: no one was rooting for Darnold to fail. But in the NFL, where every snap is scrutinized, and every throw analyzed, the truth has a way of revealing itself—whether we’re ready for it or not.
This Thursday, Good Morning Football posted on their X account about the NFL host Kyle Brandt giving Sam a tough dose of reality: “It’s not unfair to say that Sam Darnold has had a really hard time in this league and has had a really hard time in Detroit.” Brandt also pointed out, “If he comes out in the game and throws an early pick or there’s a missed throw to Justin Jefferson,” and if he doesn’t perform well in this game, he might not be the Vikings’ starting QB next season. That might seem like a harsh call!

Darnold is totally stealing the spotlight in the NFL this season! His stats are off the charts, totally flipping Kyle’s earlier comments on their head. From Week 1 to Week 1͏7 ͏in 2024, ͏Darnold excelled as one of the top q͏uarter͏backs. He completed 343 out of͏ 504 passes for 4,1͏53͏ yards, ͏35 t͏ouchd͏o͏wns, and 12 interceptions. His p͏ass͏er rating͏ of 106.4 placed him fift͏h in the le͏ague.

T͏his was especially cl͏ear in the͏ r͏ed zone͏ again͏s͏t the Lio͏ns. Darno͏ld atte͏mpted nine pa͏sses from͏ De͏tro͏it’͏s seve͏n-yard ͏line ͏but͏ only compl͏eted one. When this harsh reality hit, Kevin O’Connell finally spoke up about the QB situation.
Kevin O’Connell‘s take on the Sam Darnold vs McCarthy dilemma
Hey Minnesota Vikings fans, have you heard about J.J. McCarthy? He was the 10th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. The Vikings had big plans for the QB lineup, but a knee injury disrupted everything this season. Unfortunately, McCarthy is out for his rookie year due to a fully torn meniscus in his right knee. However, this setback hasn’t shaken the Vikings or head coach Kevin O’Connell.

When asked if starting QB Sam Darnold will remain when McCarthy returns next season, O’Connell shared some strong opinions. He emphasized the importance of showcasing plays that highlight each player’s strengths. “I always focus on the plays where our guys excel,” O’Connell mentioned. Also, he added, “This way, their teammates can truly understand their game.”
And honestly, who can blame him? The Vikings are enjoying an incredible season with just two losses and fourteen wins so far. However, things might be a bit tricky when McCarthy rejoins the team. The silver lining is that McCarthy remains involved, attending meetings actively as he recovers. “J.J. is doing a fantastic job and has really made his presence felt during rehab while participating in meetings,” the coach said. Even though McCarthy’s rookie season was over before it even began, the Vikings are in solid shape regarding their QB situation. With Sam Darnold leading the way, if he plays smart in the next game, fans can expect the Vikings to outperform the Rams!
