Home/NFL

Ah, the NFL Draft… Where no two opinions are similar and that’s the whole fun of it. This year, Arizona State’s Cam Skattebo is the latest to stir the debate pot.

On one side, you have fans who love his bruising, no-nonsense style. On the other, you have NFL analyst Greg Cosell throwing up a caution flag like a ref who just saw a questionable hit. So, what’s the deal? Is Skattebo an underrated wrecking ball, or is Cosell onto something that teams should seriously consider before making a move?

Let’s start with the hype. Skattebo’s 2024 numbers were ridiculous—1,711 rushing yards, 21 TDs, plus another 605 yards and three scores through the air. Okay, imagine this. Forget you were seeing an RB on the route. Oh, no! Instead, picture a guy running past defenders like they owed him money. And here’s the thing: I wouldn’t blame you for instantly taking Saquon Barkley‘s name. But that doesn’t mean you’re right in saying that.

Kansas City reporter Lyle Graversen put it best: “He’s a short, stocky back that runs like the entire defense insulted his mother and now he’s out for revenge.” His ability to bounce off defenders like a pinball had some folks convinced he’s an NFL star in the making. One fan even asked, ‘What am I missing?’ Well, let’s talk about that.

Greg Cosell, one of the sharpest minds in football analysis, isn’t sold. “He’s got some stiffness to him. He doesn’t have higher-level athletic traits,” Cosell warned. Translation? Skattebo’s tape is fun, but his playstyle is giving, ‘He is cut out to face the NFL defenses just yet’ vibes.

Now, that’s where the GMs might wanna start second-guessing all the build-up. More so, analysts like Cosell are so direct with their scout reports that there’s no chance they won’t put your mind through a bender.

That said, Cosell isn’t dismissing Skattebo outright. He even compared him—loosely—to Kyren Williams, who wasn’t a flashy prospect out of Notre Dame but thrived with the right scheme in Los Angeles. The key question for Skattebo: Where does he land?

What’s your perspective on:

Can Skattebo's bruising style thrive in the NFL, or will his lack of speed hold him back?

Have an interesting take?

A team with a strong offensive line and a power-running scheme could turn him into a serious weapon. But if he ends up somewhere that requires finesse and open-field creativity? Well, that’s where concerns start creeping in.

So, does Jacksonville sound like the fit for Cam Skattebo?

Some teams will love Cam Skattebo’s smashmouth style, while others might hesitate. Main hesitation point? A lack of top-tier athleticism will hold him back. But Shad Khan‘s got a lot to prove after last season’s dismal 4-13 record, despite sky-high promises. And now, after Cosell’s reports, Cam might be in a similar position as well. So, by fate, the Jaguars should go for him. But let’s see if the footballing gods approve or not…

Jacksonville is in an interesting place. They’ve made moves in free agency to shore up their offensive line and depth, but the backfield still needs some juice. Sure, Travis Etienne is the lead guy, and Tank Bigsby is in the mix, but a bruiser like Skattebo could give this offense something it doesn’t quite have—a punishing, downhill runner who thrives in short-yardage and red-zone situations.

Imagine a goal-line package where defenses know what’s coming but still can’t stop it. That’s Skattebo’s kind of party.

Let’s start with the strengths first. 1. Skattebo isn’t just a power backgot surprising agility for a guy his size. 2. He doesn’t waste movement, he finishes runs with authority, and he catches the ball better than you’d expect. The Jaguars could use that versatility, especially with Liam Coen looking to cook something that Jacksonville has never tasted before. The question is, can he adapt to a more finesse-based scheme, or will the team have to tweak things to fit his style?

Of course, there are concerns. 1. Skattebo doesn’t have breakaway speed—he’s been chased down more than a few times in open space. 2. Ball security? Needs work. 3. His blocking technique? A little hit-or-miss. These are fixable issues, but in a league where rookies have to earn their touches, he’ll need to clean them up fast.

So, is Jacksonville the perfect fit? Maybe not perfect, but could make sense in hindsight. Cutting to the chase: Skattebo’s not excelletent as the recent trend has shown. But he isn’t bad or average. Simply put: he’s the kind to either surprise the hell out of the pro-football on his debut or will lead the fans to say, ‘As expected.’
