Kansas City Chiefs’ downward spiral saw Patrick Mahomes’s reaction invite scrutiny from the NFL, per sources. The latest defeat may have set off alarm bells, but the sight of the QB1 losing it against the Bills drew all the headlines. A frustrated Mahomes was even ranting to Josh Allen about a crucial referee decision during the game. This could be seen as frustration at his numbers, but the underlying reason came forth from a man who has been in Patrick Mahomes’s shoes. He touched upon why (with numbers) the 28-year-old has lost his effectiveness. It concerns the QB1’s offensive line.

Robert Griffin III held the Chiefs’ wide receivers accountable. He particularly pointed out Kadarius Toney‘s role (offside) in the missed TD that denied the Chiefs a win over their AFC rivals. “He was not reacting to the flag, he was not reacting to the refs not getting the call right.” The same segment on ESPN’s Get Up also saw Griffin bring forward a stat to put things into perspective.

He said, “They had 33 drops this year. When you talk about Mahomes to his receivers QBR wise, he’s 23rd in the league when targeting his receivers.” The former QB even pointed out how far Patrick Mahomes has dropped from the past season because of the miscommunications.

“Run it back the entire season and he’s 3rd in the league. So this is a boil-up of all of the miscued communications, the drops.”

Griffin III’s words, backed with numbers, will have many opinions from NFL fans. Whether audiences agree with him or not, the lack of communication was evident against the Bills. That cost the Chiefs the game and could probably cost Patrick Mahomes a bit more.

Patrick Mahomes may face punishments following outrage over reversed TD

Patrick Mahomes had a complete meltdown as he exited the field after the drive. At 2nd and 10 on the 49-yard line, the QB passed the football to Travis Kelce, who threw a lateral to Toney. The WR successfully scored a touchdown, but officials deemed him to be offside at the start of the play (a flag was thrown before Mahomes made his first pass). This ruled out the TD and Mahomes threw three incompletions to conclude the drive. He returned to the sideline, threw off his helmet, and used swear words as video evidence suggests.

The 28-year-old had to be calmed down by his teammates, but continued with his disappointment at the decision. As the Chiefs QB met Josh Allen following the game, he was heard saying, “Wildest f**king call I’ve ever seen! Offensive offside in that moment, man!! F**king terrible!” Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes spoke about the same even after the game.

Per Ian Rapoport, the league will review the incident as there is “a long-standing policy against questioning the integrity of the referees.”
