The Washington Commanders need to wait a tad bit longer. The squad had fired Head Coach Ron Rivera two weeks ago. Ever since that day, the position has been lying vacant. But it’s not like the team is in a hurry. Magic Johnson may have dominated the hardwood court. However, when it comes to the gridiron, the team he partly owns is struggling. With their abysmal 4-13 record, there was no chance they were going to make it to the postseason.
Now they have ample time on their hands for coach hunting. The list of candidates is already up there. But they cannot interview them just yet. On a positive note, one prospect is really close to being named the HC.
Commanders will need to wait longer

The hunt goes on. Ideally, they’d like to wrap things up as soon as possible. But one thing stands in their way: the postseason. Ben Standing shared details regarding the hurdle on X. There are three candidates that the team is particularly interested in. Their names are OC Ben Johnson (Lions), DC Aaron Glenn (again, Lions), and DC Mike Macdonald (Ravens).
The Commanders can begin in-person interviews today with head coaching candidates.
However…
Because Lions OC Ben Johnson, Lions DC Aaron Glenn and Ravens DC Mike Macdonald are still in the post-season, those meetings must wait until 1/29.

Since all three teams have made it to the playoffs, the squad will need to wait till January 29 to interview them. The Commanders had actually already met with Johnson earlier. It was just an informal meeting that happened last Friday. And now post-29th, it will be their first “official” meeting. For now, it seems that the Commanders are going to swing in favor of Johnson.
Will Johnson emerge as the favorite pick?
The Lions OC is not banking on just one team. He’s also interviewed with the Panthers before hopping on to Washington. That’s not all. Two other teams are also expected to host him for coaching talks. The Athletic reported that the Commanders could choose him over OC Bobby Slowik, Jim Harbaugh, or even the legendary Bill Belichick.

But that’s for another day. For now, he has to focus on the upcoming NFC Championship game. It’s obviously going to be a big game for him. The Lions have made it to the playoffs after a 32-year-long drought.

It wouldn’t be too far-fetched to say that Johnson played a key role in the Lions’ revival. The Commanders, if they hire him, hope that he will bring the same magic to Magic Johnson’s team.
