A couple of years ago, Carson Wentz was dubbed the MVP to be by an NFL journalist. But his premonitions didn’t come true, and Wentz’s career went into a spiral of doom. Starting with the Eagles, the QB never found stability after he left his drafting team. For one, his injuries derailed his career, and secondly, he didn’t get a lot of opportunities as a starter to explore growth in his professional journey.
Now, he has signed with the Kansas City Chiefs as a backup QB. Unlike the other teams, the Chiefs might have a plan for Wentz, and he might potentially fit into their scheme of things without major hiccups. Nick Wright had a few things to say about the Chiefs’ new signing and potential use of the QB.

“You go into the season as Carson Wentz as your starting quarterback you’re screwed,” is how Nick Wright started the debate. The First Things First host pointed out how the Indianapolis Colts missed out on the playoffs because of the QB’s lack of competitiveness and him being traded to the Commanders in the next season later.

The move from Colts to Commanders happened when Wentz threw 4 picks that “ruined” the playoff chances for the Indianapolis team. The journalist jokingly said that he would have to stop sharing his mock drafts with America because it has come true and might expose his connection to the Chiefs front office. He then pointed out something interesting about the Chiefs signing the QB as their backup.
The host mentioned that up till now, the Chiefs didn’t risk running the QB sneak play because it posed a safety risk to Mahomes. This happened in the game against the Broncos during the 4 and 1 play when Mahomes dislocated his right kneecap. Per Wright, the Chiefs signed Wentz to run the sneak plays.
“Carson Wentz is going to be the quarterback sneak guy and the gold line guy. That’s perfect, great use of resources, costs no money, this is his specialty, I’m all for it,” reflected Wright stating his case. But there’s just one problem with Wright’s assessment of Wentz.
Is Carson Wentz the right choice as a QB sneak guy?
Some time ago, Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated did a piece on Carson Wentz where he said, “He’s become, in a lot of ways, a statue back there, which makes him, to defenders, a fish in a barrel,” pointing out Wentz’s inability to make plays if he didn’t have a set system in place to support him.

Another thing to worry about is the amount of injuries Wentz has amassed over time. We know that QB sneak is a risky move and most of the time ends up hurting the QBs if not done correctly. A concussion, a sprain, and a spoiled knee are some of the issues that Wentz is facing right now and adding him as the “QB sneak” guy might exacerbate those problems.

He signed a one-year deal with the Chiefs and the monetary details of his contract are not available as of yet. All that’s left to see now is whether the Chiefs will prosper with Wentz as their QB2.
