Will Brock Purdy become “Mr. Irrelevant” once again? It might be the case as the San Francisco 49ers are set to welcome the Detroit Lions at home. While it is a new dawn for Jared Goff and Co., people are apprehensive about Brock Purdy’s performance. Especially after the December game against the Baltimore Ravens where he threw 4 picks. Would Purdy be able to prove the “system QB” allegations wrong?
The upcoming game against the Lions has NFL analysts and pundits salivating. People have already picked their sides, and it seems like Colin Cowherd is trying to be a bit of a maverick. He thinks the Detroit Lions will get the best of the Niners and says that there is nothing special about Brock Purdy, as he makes a case for the Detroit team in an excerpt of his podcast The Herd with Colin Cowherd.

The host starts by praising the Dan Campbell-led Lions and mentions how Jared Goff and Co. are 22-7 with the new coaching. Per Cowherd, the Lions’ offense is averaging about 390 yards per game. He substantiates his claims by adding how Jared Goff has the best TD-interception ratio over the last two seasons. He is 59-19 in terms of TD-Int. The reasons behind these numbers may be due to top-quality receivers, a strong run game, a phenomenal offensive coordinator, and an amazing O-line.
Adding to this, Cowherd mentioned how the Lions’ defense is top-tier. Their capability to get to the QB is unparalleled with multiple sacks in the last 8 games. On the other hand, the Niners’ defense is facing some challenges with the right-side lagging. Also, Deebo Samuel suffered a shoulder injury in the game against the Packers, however, his return to the championship game stays questionable.
Pointing out these stats, Cowherd said about Purdy, “He is the least talented quarterback by a long shot.” And concluded by adding that the Niners are expected to add big numbers on the board if Deebo Samuel ends up playing the championship game. However, the host did substantiate his claims by giving away a few stats about the Niners QB.

Cowherd then shifted his focus on Brock Purdy and laid out some stats from his past games. He pointed out how, in the last 3 games, Purdy had only 3 TDs but had 4 picks. His passer rating also wasn’t that impressive, cumulatively adding up to 79 since the last 3 games.
Despite all the odds against Purdy, he is the only QB remaining in the post-season that was not the first-round pick. Jared Goff, Patrick Mahomes, and Lamar Jackson were all picked in the first round, while Purdy had to wait for long to get his turn. He might just prove everyone wrong because this is a home game for the Niners.
