The pressure on the Kansas City Chiefs to bench star wide receiver Kadarius Toney is mounting with every game. When he was traded to the Chiefs last year, the team had high hopes for him. Tight end Travis Kelce, had even gone on record to say that he never thought that the Chiefs could get him, but that he was happy that they did. But now after two straight mistakes that cost the Chiefs their last two games, has he changed his mind on Toney?

In the game against the New England Patriots, which KC won 27-17, both teammates had made expensive mistakes. But Kelce stood his ground and defended his teammate against all criticism. After the game, the two were seen walking together off the field, giving some fans the impression that Kelce was upset with him for his second straight mistake. But Kelce has cleared the air.

Kelce defended Toney on the latest episode of his New Heights podcast. “He had a drop. I had a drop. I was just there telling him that we both have to be better.” Luckily, for Chiefs fans, there is no bad blood between the two offensive players.

Travis Kelce had dropped a touchdown pass in the Patriots game early in the third quarter when the Chiefs were leading 14-10. The pass would have increased the margin between the two scores, but Patrick Mahomes threw the ball toward Kelce, who was already in the end zone, where the ball bounced from his hands and went out-of-bounds.

Toney, on the other hand, made a more expensive mistake which not only resulted in the Chiefs losing out on a touchdown but indirectly led to the Patriots scoring one for themselves.

The 2x Super Bowl Champion passed the ball to Toney, which bounced off his hands as well, and Patriots linebacker Jahlani Tavai intercepted the ball early in the fourth quarter. The Pats, two plays later, went on to score a touchdown and brought down the 27-10 lead to 27-17. Kelce agreed that both of them did not play at their best, but that was the good part about the NFL. “You cannot play your best sometimes and still come out victorious.”

His previous mistake came when in the final moments of the game against the Buffalo Bills, Toney ran with the ball for a touchdown. Nothing wrong there. But then the referees negated that score because Toney had overstepped the line of scrimmage and that had resulted in an offside penalty. The Chiefs were unable to rectify that mistake so late in the game and ended up losing to the Bills.
