The Cowboys‘ search for a head coach is one of the most complex situations in the league. It’s not only about the talent. It’s also about anyone dreaming of becoming the Cowboys HC accepting the reality of the situation. He has to be quiet like Mike McCarthy and play along to Jerry Jones‘ tunes. He also has to be the shield that absorbs most of the criticism that comes the organization’s way. Also, he has to guess the owner-and-GM’s real plans and deal with his influence that he isn’t willing to lower. That is a tough thing to find.
National reporter, Albert Breer, appeared on the January 23 episode of the Dan Patrick show where they had a good laugh about the Cowboys situation. While talking about the lack of timely decision-making, Breer said, “What do you do if you’re really lost? You lean back on familiarity. Right. Deion Sanders, Kellen Moore, Brian Schottenheimer, Jason Witten, like the names that you’re hearing here, are all names they’re familiar with, which is exactly what you would do if you didn’t have a plan?” Ah, it appears America’s Team is indeed operating without a plan again.

Deion Sanders was always a big question mark. He had already made his intentions clear by announcing he would come to the NFL only to train his son, Shedeur Sanders. And Jerry Jones already has Dak Prescott. If the owner wants someone good on the offensive side to help train his signal caller, there are other coaches for that. Kellen Moore is a huge potential candidate. He was with the Cowboys for 5 years (2018 – 2023) as their quarterbacks coach, later promoted to offensive coordinator. But he is with the arch-rival Eagles now, who are in the NFL championship game. So, Jerry Jones has to wait if wants Moore as the head coach, despite interviewing him a day before the Eagles’ divisional game.
While reports were indicating Jerry Jones had a word with the OC Brian Schottenheimer about a promotion, everything is on hold for now. The search goes on.
Jerry Jones might ‘settle’ for a Super Bowl winning coach
With his self-made plans that he delights in keeping to himself, the Cowboys owner wasted the opportunity to sign 2 excellent prospects. One was the Lions‘ OC Ben Johnson, who went to the Bears while the Patriots grabbed Mike Vrabel. However, Jones is still ready to wait. And might go to a surprise candidate in the form of a Super Bowl winning coach.

According to Fort Worth Star-Telegram’s Nick Harris, Jerry Jones liked his discussions with Schottenheimer. But if he hired him as the head coach, it would be a surprise. He also revealed that Jones had a conversation with former Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll. The Super Bowl XLVIII winner is currently serving as an advisor to The ‘Hawks. That would certainly raise some eyebrows if he signs up.

However, he is ready to wait till Super Bowl LIX on February 9 at Caesars Superdome, New Orleans, Louisiana. It might be possible that he’ll try to have a final word with Moore before making the decision. He also talked to former NY Jets HC Robert Saleh who is highly expected to reunite with the 49ers. But Jerry Jones could at least reveal his thinking behind his moves. It would help fans understand what’s happening at the franchise.
