The Dallas Cowboys‘ head coach search is far from over. Owner Jerry Jones never misses a chance to surprise fans. A day ago, the Dallas Cowboys organization was considering promoting their offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer to head coach, but it’s still up in the air. Whereas there is still no firm update from Deion Sanders about the Cowboys’ head coaching role. The Cowboys also interviewed the former Jets HC Robert Saleh, five days ago.

But in waiting for a firm decision by the Cowboys, an NFL reporter has come up with an important update on Robert Saleh. The reporter, Michael Silver, has posted on X: “I expect the 49ers to rehire Robert Saleh as their defensive coordinator soon.” The NYT’s Athletic has also confirmed this news. In fact, there is a chance that the 49ers could hire him as the 49ers are searching for a worthy DC after firing Nick Sorensen.

But apart from the vacancy POV, there is most definite logic the 49ers can hire him as a DC. What’s that? Saleh has a deep connection with the 49ers franchise as he was their DC from 2017 to 2000. However, in 2021 he was hired by Woody Johnson and Christopher Johnson to lead the Jets. But his journey culminated in his firing from the Job.

So, Robert Saleh’s interest in the 49ers is a serious alarm for the Cowboys to lose out on a gem. We saw a similar situation in the Jets’ HC recruitment a day ago. They showed a lot of interest and belief in Aaron Glenn who had already been in the organization, and eventually hired Glenn as HC. Let’s think of it this way… who would you have chosen for the coaching job among roughly equally talented candidates, the one you knew or the one you didn’t? Depends, but if the history with the team is right, it’s probably the one familiar with the org that ends up in the hot seat.

On February 13, 2017, Saleh was hired by the 49ers as DC to work under HC Kyle Shanahan (2017-present). And after two years, the 49ers defense was ripping the league apart. The 49rs were sixth in forced fumbles, second in total defense, and fifth in passing defense. And it’s said that the 49ers defense was at unprecedented performance levels under Saleh’s tenure. A strong reason for Kyle Shanahan to want him back.

But guess what? Any confirmation of Saleh’s move would trigger a domino effect elsewhere.

After Mike McCarthy‘s departure from the franchise, the Cowboys have been in a tornado of interview updates and rumors. The Colorado Buffaloes HC Deion Sanders is also under consideration, but reports say that Coach Prime would only join any organization on one condition—to coach his sons. Sanders’ long-time friend RGIII has confirmed this unwritten condition.

But other than him and Robert Saleh, Jerry Jones is looking at Pete Carroll to take charge of the Cowboys. Reportedly, he has already met Jerry Jones to discuss the same. Carroll is an advisor to the Seattle Seahawks. He was also a head coach of the Seahawks from 2010 to 2023, winning the Super Bowl in 2014. He also has an overall record of 97-19 in his college coaching career.
