When the news dropped that the Eagles were cutting Darius Slay, it felt like the end of an era. The guy’s been locking down WRs in Philly since 2020, and just like that—boom, gone. Fans were already mourning, picturing him in another jersey. Slay himself was gearing up for free agency. But hold up—because in the NFL, nothing is ever that simple. Just when we thought he was packing his bags, a plot twist hit.
Word on the street? Slay might not be out of Philly just yet. A national reporter says there’s still a chance he comes back, just at a lower price. No deal’s locked in, but the door’s definitely not closed. When asked about it, the response was “Always possible.” So yeah, the Eagles made a money move by cutting him, but they might just be playing chess instead of checkers.
I’m told it’s possible that Darius Slay, after being released, could still come back with the Eagles at a lower number

NFL insider Ian Rapoport was the first to spill the tea on Slay’s release, and honestly, it all came down to the bag. The move saved the Eagles around $4.3 million in cap space and kept them from coughing up a $5 million option bonus in September. Plus, by hitting him with that post-June 1 designation, they spread out the dead money hit over two years. Smart? Yeah. Painful? Also yeah. Losing a veteran like Slay leaves a big hole in the secondary.
Slay might be 34, but don’t get it twisted—he’s still got that dawg in him. He’s made it clear that he’s not done and wants to run it back for at least one more season. If Philly works out a cheaper deal, it’s a total W for both sides. But what if not? Best believe some other team will bag him real quick. Either way, Slay’s next move is about to be a movie.
Eagles pull the plug on ‘Big Play’ Slay
Ayo, it’s the end of an era—Darius Slay is officially getting the boot from Philly. The Eagles are set to release the six-time Pro Bowler, even though they haven’t announced it yet. But let’s be real—it still stings. Slay just helped the squad win a Super Bowl three weeks ago, and now he’s out? Cold world. His wife, Jennifer, kept it real on social media, simply saying: “Real tears.” And honestly? Same.

What’s your perspective on:
Is releasing Slay a smart move, or will it haunt the Eagles next season?
Have an interesting take?
With nine picks in the regular season and a clutch playoff INT against Green Bay this year, he’s been a certified baller. But beyond the stats, he was a locker room leader and a walking vibe. Nick Sirianni even hyped him up earlier this season, saying, “Any time you’re around Slay, he’s got this energy, and this love for his teammates, and this love for football, and this love for life. That’s infectious.” Now, the Eagles gotta figure out how to replace that energy. Spoiler alert: It won’t be easy.

Darius Slay hasn’t spoken directly on his release, but he’s been reposting stuff about it on social media, so he’s clearly aware. He kinda saw it coming, though. On the St. Brown podcast last month, he said, “I got one more (year left). You know how that works. So whatever they want to do. I might re-sign back, hopefully. If I ain’t, I got to see what we doing because I do want to play one more year, for sure.” And if Philly doesn’t want him? “I’d definitely go back to Detroit.” So yeah, don’t be shocked if the Lions make a move.
As for the Eagles, this is just the beginning of a messy offseason. They still gotta figure out what to do with free agents like Zack Baun, Josh Sweat, and Mekhi Becton, plus decide who’s gonna fill that CB spot next to Quinyon Mitchell. Cooper DeJean and Kelee Ringo could be next up, but let’s be real—replacing Slay’s leadership and playmaking is gonna be a huge task.
