Ever since the Patriots let go of Bill Belichick at the end of the 2023 season, there has been widespread speculation to see what will be the next step for Belichick. The former Pats HC is inarguably one of the best ever and plenty of teams would want to get him into the team. The question, though, is where would Belichick want to go?

Seems like we now have the answer to this question. According to a recent post by David Schultz, the former Pats HC would have been interested in a move to the Cowboys. Taking to X, Schultz shared, “Bill Belichick would have been interested in the Cowboys’ job, and it’s believed that Dallas would have been interested in him, had he known the position would become available. Belichick and his camp never received any indication during backchannel conversations that the job would open up, which is partly why he ended up at UNC. Belichick has an excellent relationship with the Jones family.”

This news could have come as a blessing for the Cowboys fans as they recently let go of HC Mike McCarthy. Jerry Jones would certainly have wanted to get Belichick to the Cowboys as the veteran coach was sure to bring stability, discipline, and a winning mentality to the Cowboys, something that they missed as they ended the season 7-10.

Sadly, this didn’t happen and it will remain as one of those ‘What If’ scenarios, as Belichick recently took up the role as the HC for the University of Northern Carolina, and apparently has no interest in coming back to the NFL. The veteran coach is happy with UNC as he is looking for new challenges and has signed a 5-year contract with them. This now means that Jones and the Cowboys will need to look at other replacements for McCarthy.

If not Bill Belichick, who then?

Just a few days ago, it felt like Mike McCarthy would continue as the Cowboys HC. And while Jones had not given a definitive answer about the future of the HC, McCarthy for one was eager to stay at the Cowboys and believed they were going in the right direction with the team. Alas, this couldn’t happen as McCarthy and the club couldn’t agree on some aspects of the contract, including the term length.

What’s your perspective on:

Could Belichick be the missing piece to finally bring the Cowboys back to their glory days?

Have an interesting take?

The question now is who is next for the Cowboys? Well, with Belichick out of the picture, why not go for a ‘mini Bill Belichick’? Well, according to Keyshawn Johnson, Mike Vrabel is the perfect HC for the Cowboys and will bring that Belichick mentality to the team. Vrabel, of course, has played under Belichick and is one of the hottest prospects out there, so it wouldn’t be a surprise if Jones goes the Vrabel way (but that’s out of the picture with him going to the Pats).

The other big name that seems to be on the radar of every team (and for good reason) is Ben Johnson. The Detroit Lions OC has impressed one and all with his impressive tactics and is inarguably one of the most popular coordinators to not make the jump to HC. Well, this could be the year Johnson chooses to do so and if he does the Cowboys should really look to bring him into the team.

Whether it be Johnson or Vrabel or anyone else, they will get to lead a talented squad if they join the Cowboys, especially working with Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb, and Micah Parsons will certainly entice many people. Who will the best fit for the team be? More importantly, who will Jones think will fit best with the Cowboys? Well, we will surely get to know soon enough.
