The offseason is a different kind of chaos, and teams have to make calculated, smart moves during this time. One wrong move and your entire season is over. Just ask John Mara and the Giants –their decision to let Saquon Barkley go still haunts them to this day. But let’s talk about the Niners. While all eyes are on Brock Purdy’s extension talks, the team took a major hit with their QB coach’s exit. On the other hand, Kyle Shanahan has been making moves, as the team has found their new OC for the upcoming season. So, what’s cooking at the Niners camp?
Well, Niners fans won’t be happy to hear this, but it’s the end of the Brian Griese era for the Niners. Yes, that’s right. The team’s QB coach, Brian, is leaving the Niners after three seasons. And no, he is not parting ways with San Francisco to join another team. The 49-year-old is saying goodbye to his coaching career altogether. The Niners recently announced their coaching staff for the upcoming season, and Griese’s name missing from the list raised a lot of eyebrows. An insider has now reported that “there was no ouster of Griese, who was well regarded by the team’s QBs. Griese didn’t want to coach anymore.“
Per source, there was no ouster of Griese, who was well regarded by the team’s QBs. Griese didn‘t want to coach anymore. Earlier this year he declined an interview request for the Jets’ head coaching job. https://t.co/gdwBKHyY2q

So, while people were expecting some drama to unfold, it turned out the former QB simply wanted a break from the grueling football life. As per the source, Brian had already turned down an interview request from Woody Johnson’s team for their head coaching position.
So, now with Brian gone, the Niners have a new QB coach. Kyle Shanahan will also be kicking off 2025 with a not-so-new OC.

Kyle Shanahan’s new coaching staff
First things first, who will be the new QB coach for the Niners in the 2025 season? Enter 36-year-old Mick Lombardi. Mick began his coaching career with Fordham University’s football team in 2009. He stepped into the NFL coaching scene with the six-time Super Bowl-winning team, the New England Patriots. Mick has also been with the Jets and Raiders. Last season, under HC Kyle Shanahan, Mick was the offensive pass game specialist for the Niners. It was his second stint with the team. Mick had been on the Niners’ coaching staff earlier, back in 2013.

Brian Griese stepping back—Is it a wise move for his well-being or a loss for 49ers?
Have an interesting take?
So, in short, the team has promoted him from within instead of hiring a new QB coach. Well, congrats to Mick on that promotion! But he’s not the only one getting a new role. Klint Kubiak will also pop the champagne after being officially named the team’s new OC. The team had already promoted him to the OC position right after the regular season ended, they’ve just made it official now.

On top of that, the Niners’ new DC, Robert Saleh, will be reuniting with Gus Bradley, whom the team has chosen as the assistant HC. Both of them will have to put in a lot of work on the team’s defense. San Francisco’s defense stood at the 25th position in the 2024 season. So they better buckle up to fix things. Now, with all these new coaching moves, it will be interesting to see how the new-look Niners shape up.
