The Jaguars have taken their first big step in 2025. They fired Doug Peterson as the head coach after a dismal 4-13 win-loss record this year. Their billionaire owner, Shahid Khan, wants the team to move in a different direction. And they have got the man to command their new direction, Liam Coen. But wait, they may have played a dirty trick along the way.

Reporter Michael Silver has claimed that the Jaguars have pulled a “sham”. They had already made up their mind to hire Coen. But they still allowed Raiders DC Patrick Graham to fly to the franchise base to conduct an interview. “That’s messed up”. In three simple words, he trolled the team, the owner, and their shady tactics.

However, the HC contract details haven’t been decided yet. According to USA Today, an anonymous source claimed Coen told the Buccaneers about his move on Thursday night. He had joined them as the offensive coordinator for the 2024 season. The news has sent the Bucs into a frenzy. They believed they had secured their OC with a record offer. But they will be ruing not putting pen to paper on that deal with him. Now they’ll have to gamble with that money elsewhere. Shahid Khan & co. were also taken aback when Coen initially told them he wasn’t interested in the head coaching job for the Jaguars. They failed to land a second in-person interview with him. But he had a sudden change of heart.

Notably, this will be Coen’s fifth different coaching assignment in five years. Since 2020, he has gone from the Rams to Kentucky, back to the Rams…back to Kentucky before joining the Bucs this season. For the Jaguars, Coen is their 8th head coach in 30 years. They have taken many other decisions to make their team a Super Bowl contender. It’s shuffling time in the league.

Did Shahid Khan sacrifice his GM for an HC?

The Jaguars were working with Trent Baalke as their director of player personnel since 2020. But after going 2-9 after the week 11 game against the Lions on November 17, they fired their GM David Caldwell. Shahid Khan then promoted Baalke as their interim GM.

However, when they were searching for a head coach, many refused to work with him. It left the Jaguars in a confused state. So, the owner talked to his GM and decided to separate on  January 22nd. In his official statement, Khan said, “Following several discussions with Trent Baalke this week, we both arrived at the conclusion that it is in our mutual best interests to respectfully separate, effective immediately.

In a move to change their future, Shahid Khan promoted assistant general manager Ethan Waugh to the position of interim GM. Shahid Khan’s move of changing his stance was impactful as a day later, Coen took up the Jags HC role. His initial experience as a quarterbacks coach will also help Trevor Lawrence. But can he repeat the same success? We’ll see.
