Is Patrick Mahomes' superstition just a joke, or does it actually affect his game?

“Hopefully, we keep winning games — and I can wear them for 20-plus years.” Guess what? That is what Patrick Mahomes said about his underwear. Speaking on ESPN’s “ManningCast”, on 14th November 2023, the Chiefs QB confirmed that he wore the same pair throughout the season. Why? Well, we human beings have a long relation with superstitions. And yes, this proves that no matter how beastly Mahomes is on the gridiron, he is still a human. But the same pair of underpants? Come on! You might be feeling disgusted just like this comedian, who could not believe what she read.

In a video uploaded on 17th of July, actress and comedian Sherri Shepherd didn’t hold her feelings back. She made sure to let Patrick know, “This is the nastiest thing I have ever read in my life.” But at such a revelation, anyone is expected to be left baffled. “NFL quarterback Patrick Mahomes sticks to this superstition to win big games. He revealed that he has worn the same red underwear since his rookie season. He admits that he washes them but only once every once in a while is what he says. And Patrick said if his team is on a winning streak he don’t wash his underwear at all,” Sherri gave a gist of what she read to her audience.

What got the crowd cracking wasn’t her narration of the superstition, but the relatable references. For instance, she called out men for passing gas and then asked the audience how Patrick wore his underwear in such scenarios. Sherri was unhinged. She was throwing shade on Pat like the Chiefs’ QB throws yards. Matching him yard-for-yard, but all the while ‘roasting’ him. And she was only getting warmed up.

One of her best lines of the night stands out – Patrick Mahomes’ fans, this one is for all of you. “I feel sorry for the other players on the team ’cause, you know, all them players, they got to be like: ‘Hut, hut, hut, hut’. And now, it’s not hut it’s: Funk, funk, funk, funk.” She ended this joke with this punchline, “I said, ‘No wonder Patrick is not getting tackled. I feel bad!” Well, that’s the charm of a comedian. Sherri acknowledged Patrick as one of the best QBs of this generation but did so subtly, without losing the humor of her set. Her point was simple: this superstition is nasty.

But in Patrick’s defense, there’s more to him wearing the same pair of underwear since his rookie season than just superstition. It was a gift from his beloved.

Brittany and Patrick Mahomes’ love gave birth to the ‘nasty’ superstition

Brittany and Patrick have been love birds since they were in high school. In 2022, they got married and have two children now, and are expecting their third child. But in between, in 2018, when Pat became the starter for the Chiefs, he received his infamous red underwear from Brittany before his first game as a starter against the Los Angeles Chargers.

What’s your perspective on:

Is Patrick Mahomes' superstition just a joke, or does it actually affect his game?

Have an interesting take?

“Brittany kind of got them before one of my first starts. And I wore them for that [Chargers] game,” Patrick recalled during his appearance on the ManningCast in 2023.

In that first start, Mahomes’ numbers were outrageous. He passed for 256 yards with 4 TDs guiding the Chiefs to a 38-28 victory. So, it’s not surprising he would want to keep such numbers up for the rest of the games. And he did! He went on to win the NFL MVP award in his rookie/starter season. All the while, believing it was his pair of underpants that did it for him. Even Superman would not have felt this lucky with his pair of reds!

But he’s not all that ‘nasty.’ During the ESPN show, the Chiefs’ jersey no. 15 clarified with a grin that he doesn’t wear them during the games, only to the games, so they’re not that bad. I guess the score is Sherri 4 – 1 Pat, and that ‘one’ is for washing them occasionally.

Well, you can say ‘disgusting’ but since wearing the red undies he has replied with – 2x NFL MVP, 3x Super Bowl MVP, and 3x Super Bowl wins. Unreal! But never mind these numbers and stats, all Sherri wants is for Patrick to wash his underwear after every use. Maybe after he completes the 3-peat?!
