The San Francisco rookie safety probably didn’t expect to get mowed down in his first few NFL games—but hey, welcome to the league. He had a moment he won’t forget anytime soon—courtesy of Patrick Mahomes. It was a game-changing play – Mahomes hit Malik Mustapha at the goal line during the Chiefs’ 28-18 win over the Niners.
Having been knocked down by the reigning MVP, Mustapha opened up about the moment. “We had a pretty solid game, and that happened. I was like, man, this is about to go wild,” he said. Reflecting on the play, the rookie added, “I knew as soon as it happened… why didn’t I just hit him like regular? But at the end of the day, I got put in the ground. I was like welcome to the NFL.”
Malik Mustapha on Tom Brady’s compliment on his big hit against Chiefs RB Kareem Hunt:
“It was kind of just surreal. I had a lot of people sending me that clip in particular. I grew up watching him, so just for him to talk about me and my play on the field, that was like a dream… pic.twitter.com/hAnA8RyP4H

With Mahomes standing 6’2” and weighing in at 225 lbs (plus some “dad bod” padding he jokingly mentioned in past interviews), this was no typical QB takedown situation. Instead of sliding or stepping out of bounds, the three-time Super Bowl champ powered through, knocking the Niners safety off his feet. “I gotta roll with the punches on this one,” Mustapha laughed. “A lot of Kansas City fans even came in my defense too. It was funny. It’s gonna stick for a long time for sure and something about which I can tell jokes later down the road.”
Normally, a hard-hitting safety would win that battle. But Mahomes? He took it to another level. On a 33-yard run to set up the Chiefs for a key TD, the star QB showed his versatility. His 154 passing yards (not great by his standards) and two interceptions didn’t stop him from making this pivotal play with his legs. And while Mahomes didn’t have the air attack going, his run gave Kansas City their undefeated record at 6-0.

After the game, the 28-year-old joked about the collision, saying, “I wasn’t even really trying to run him over… I’m a little heavy, and I ended up getting in there.” That weight helped the Chiefs’ QB overcome a rough passing day and finish with a TD. As the Chiefs bask in their 6-0 record, one thing’s for sure—Tom Brady’s already expressed how impressed he is with the young guns on KC’s defense.
Tom Brady applauds Chiefs rookies for defensive dominance
Tom Brady knows a thing or two about dominant defenses—and the Chiefs’ young guns are catching his eye. The GOAT praised KC team’s rookies Chris Roland-Wallace and Jaden Hicks for their standout performances. Both defenders picked off Brock Purdy, helping Kansas City cruise to a 28-18 victory. “Awesome performance by the young guys stepping in,” Brady alluded, noting how their efforts took pressure off Patrick Mahomes and the offense.

The 47-year-old went on to highlight how Kansas City’s defense’s been phenomenal, especially on days when Mahomes ain’t at his best. “It’s just complementary football,” he explained. With the D locking down opponents (limiting points and yds), their QB can afford to be less aggressive. “Once they got the lead, it just felt like low-risk plays with high reward.”
