Yesterday was a tough night for Kansas City Chiefs fans. They lost to the Buffalo Bills 17-20 in a much-hyped rivalry game. The heartbreaking moment came when a touchdown that would’ve sealed the victory for the Chiefs was negated by the referees at the last moment due to an offside call. Patrick Mahomes was beside himself with frustration and anger, even screaming at the referee and throwing his helmet on the ground. He had to be held back by his teammates.

All this was difficult for Chiefs fans to watch but especially tough for mom and superfan Randi Mahomes. She took to X to share her frustration in two words at something else that happened on the field.

Just as Mahomes threw the ball after it was snapped, two Bills defenders came at him in a bid to sack him. While one tackled him to the ground from behind, another ripped his helmet off from his face. The original video was posted by MLFootball and was captioned, “HOW IN THE HELL: Was a penalty not called on the #Bills defenders who RIPPED Patrick Mahomes helmet off his head.” Randi reacted to the video with two words: “No comment..”

This happened minutes before the offside call that negated the Chiefs’ goal was made. Mahomes told reporters about the game, “It’s obviously tough to swallow, not only for me, just for football in general. To take away greatness like that. For a guy like Travis to make a play like that.”

He also told reporters that he asked three referees why the penalty was called, but he did not receive an answer. But later, referee Carl Cheffers explained the reason for the call in a pool report.

Referee Carl Cheffers explains the call

Cheffers explained that WR Kadarius Toney was in an alignment where he was on the line of scrimmage and was lined up over the ball, and according to the NFL’s rulebook, that constitutes an offensive offside. Chiefs head coach Andy Reid was also not pleased. He said that when such a penalty was about to occur, he would usually have gotten a warning, but this time he did not.

But Cheffers defended it, saying that if they ask for alignment advice, the referees would gladly give it to them. But the team is ultimately responsible for where the players line up, and the rulebook does not mandate that a warning be issued. Even then, if the player was close to the ball, the warning could have been given, but “this particular one is beyond a warning.” Will the Chiefs manage to recover from this loss?
