Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs are having a tumultuous off-season. The team’s been taking hits left and right—from Rashee Rice facing disciplinary action to Harrison Butker catching flak for his contentious speech at Benedictine College, the red and white team can’t catch a break. Amidst all this Mahomes has stayed mum over the matter so far and it has not gone down well with the fans. In these challenging times, Patrick Mahomes’ mom, Randi, stepped up providing a much-needed shield against the storm.
Chiefs also courted controversy when two of its offensive linemen got busted in Johnson County for misdemeanor marijuana possession late Thursday night.

Chiefs’ kicker Harrison Butker drew the backlash of fans after his controversial commencement speech at Benedictine College in Kansas. He said, “Some of you may go on to lead successful careers in the world, but I would venture to guess that the majority of you are most excited about your marriage and the children you will bring into this world.” He also labelled the Pride Month a “deadly sin”and said men “set the tone of society, and when that is absent, disorder, dysfunction and chaos set in.”
The NFL distanced itself from Chiefs’ kicker Harrison Butker, as vice president Jonathan Beane clarified, “Harrison Butker gave a speech in his personal capacity, his views are not those of the NFL as an organization. The NFL is steadfast in our commitment to inclusion, which only makes our league stronger.”
But fans called out the Chiefs and Mahomes, the team’s leader, for their silence on the matter. Meanwhile, Mama Mahomes took to social media platform ‘X’ to defend her son, Patrick Mahomes, posting, “The only one qualified to throw a stone… didn’t.”

This isn’t the first time Randi has gone to bat for her kids. She proudly cheered on Patrick, saying, “I admit I am a proud mom. I’m very proud of his athletic achievements, but I am prouder of his scholastic achievements.”
Mama Mahomes is proving to be the ultimate defensive lineman, protecting her family with the kind of fierce loyalty Chiefs Kingdom can be proud of. But despite all the support, the Chiefs are facing issues with controversies swirling and the spotlight glaring.
Around a week ago Rashee Rice was alleged to be involved in an assault incident in Dallas. According to WFAA in Dallas, Rice is under investigation for assaulting a photographer early Monday morning at the address of “Lit Kitchen.” This compounds Rice’s troubles who turned himself in to authorities for his involvement in a high speed car crash in March.
Then recently two Chiefs offensive tackles Wanya Morris and Jason Godrick were both reportedly arrested over marijuana possession. The two were booked into the Johnson County Adult Detention Center just before 2 a.m. local time on Friday morning. They were then released after posting $2,500 bond.
Butker’s views on ‘motherhood’ and ‘ women’ have surely irked many fans. The Chiefs’ kicker situation is currently precarious with the team as well, even though no official statements have been made by the Chiefs yet. Despite this, some Chiefs members have taken to social media to support the kicker, and other opined how ‘backwards’ the speech was.
Patrick Mahomes, on the other hand, has admitted prior to the whole Butker incident that he doesn’t have a close relationship with the kicker.

Appearing on the Pat McAfee show after their Super Bowl win this year, Mahomes opened up abut his bond with Butker. He said, “Honestly, I don’t talk to Harrison all year long, man. I just let him do his thing.” He further added, “We sit right beside each other in team meetings and I don’t say one word to him. Only before the season and after the season, that’s the only time I talk to him.”
Mahomes is focusing on family and personal ventures in the off season. The star quarterback launched his ready-to-drink iced coffee brand, Throne Sport Coffee, with beverage industry veteran Michael Fedele. On the other hand, Brooke Schwartz, who is married to former Kansas City Chiefs player Mitch Schwartz, hit out at Butker for his speech. “I’ve stayed quiet about a lot of things, but this is absolutely so gross and backwards to me,” she said on her Instagram stories.

Tavia Hunt also shared her views on the matter. In a post on Instagram she talked about how she has encouraged her daughters chase their dreams but also find a spouse who respects them and that “raising a family together is one of the greatest blessings this world has to offer.” She also asked people to not take Butker’s comments out of context and stressed, “Sound bites overlaid with hateful comments are not what we want to model for our children or others.”
After their Super Bowl success the Chiefs have had a troublesome off season. While NFL has spoken about the Butker incident, will the Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes dive into the debate?
