Home/Boxing

Russell Wilson is back in the ring and he’s packing a punch! It’s no secret that many football players gravitate to combat sports and the Pittsburgh Steelers QB is on the same path. But this isn’t some basic interest in contact sports. There might be much more to the Super Bowl winner’s training because he’s not up in the league casually. Instead, he has a world-class professional coach and junior welterweight contenders backing him during the sessions.

Wilson’s not only losing some weight by zipping around the track but has also included other high-intensity workouts in his training regimen. And yes, it’s boxing he is taking up as his source of preparation. But hold your horses before we tell you all about his recent Instagram Story and posts. Anyone still thinking this is Russ’ first affair with boxing would be gravely mistaken.

Russell Wilson’s post on Instagram said, “Back in the Ring. Started in 2018 through 2020. Had some of my best years. Then COVID hit in 2020 and couldn’t go back in. Good to see my guys again @FreddyRoach & @MarvinSomodio #QuickFeetHeavyHands.” The QB’s Instagram Story and his post on the page show him doing some light workouts in the ring with junior welterweight contender Elvis Rodriguez’s crew.

He’s training with Freddy Roach and Marvin Somodio, who also trained the likes of Manny Pacquiao! The Steelers QB appears to be focusing on his stamina and regaining his strength this pre-season with the support of the right help. Wilson is hanging out with the Top Rank crew and is making the most out of it.

Another post in the same carousel shows a topless Russell Wilson showing off his biceps with the Dominican pro boxer Elvis Rodgriuez. The welterweight boxer holds a current record of 15-1-1 and has won 13 fights by KO in his career. Rodriguez also signed a promotional pact with Top Rank Boxing- The worldwide leader in boxing promotions. So, he seems like the right person to guide Wilson during his training!

In light of his continued practice and will to do well, the QB seems to be reviving the zest to succeed. As Wilson had stated earlier, “Man, I feel the fountain of youth. I feel revived in every way, mentally, emotionally, spiritually. I feel confident. I think at some point you have to know who you are as a player, as a man, as a competitor. As somebody who’s been fortunate to be able to play this game, I don’t doubt it. I trust it. I felt really good last year playing. I felt really confident in the midst of everything. And so I think right now I have all that confidence times 10.”

His current journey of practice and progress seems to be an indicator of the same, with the QB having an experienced boxing coach in his corner amidst all scenes of doubt surrounding the veteran player.

Russell Wilson’s post-NFL gig confirmed?

Russell Wilson is hanging out with Freddy Roach, a hall-of-fame boxer, who quit because he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. But that didn’t take away his years of boxing experience. Hence, he started coaching and since then, he has trained the likes of Pacquiao, Amir Khan, Virgil Hill, James Toney, Miquel Cotto, and the list goes on. Wilson’s story had Roach pointing at him as everyone does a quintessential boxing pose.

His story read, “Back in the ring again. 2018-2020 the ring was one of my favorite places. #QuickFeetHeavyHands.” The Steelers QB first worked out with Roach back in 2017, as reported by ESPN. Wilson had revealed that boxing helped him with “working on my balance and quickness and just continuing to build my game. The idea of being able to do anything and everything at any moment, and so you have to be prepared for that.”

The former Broncos star had also talked about the agility it brings in him along with the discipline, stating, “Also, great boxers have great defense too, meaning being able to move and get away and all that. So that was something that was really important to me too. And it’s a great conditioning workout, one of the hardest workouts you could ever do.”

In 2018, the QB had confirmed using boxing as a regular workout, which per his caption, had been hindered due to COVID-19. In the newly surfaced pictures, Wilson’s post also includes John Shackleton in the frame. The sports performance trainer has worked with athletes from sports leagues like the NFL, NBA, and also some NCAA players.

It took a while for Wilson to take up boxing again, but maybe some of this training will help him on the football field. All eyes remain on Russell Wilson, anticipating his progress on the gridiron.
