Once the 2025 offseason reaches its conclusion, the biggest story to look back on will surely be the Pittsburgh Steelers QB drama. What appeared to be a two-way tussle between Russell Wilson and Justin Fields ended on a disappointing note. Wilson found his new home in New York, where he won his first and only Super Bowl. While Fields is entering a new chapter in his NFL career—also in the Big Apple but for Wilson’s cross-town rivals. As for the Steelers, they are stuck with Aaron Rodgers, who has left them hanging for almost a month. But that’s the story of the Steelers’ free agency. Looking ahead to the NFL draft, it seems they have finally decided on whom to sign in Green Bay.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported the Steelers are bringing in Shedeur Sanders for a visit today. This comes after the Steelers’ top brass skipped his Colorado Pro Day. At that time, it looked like the Steelers weren’t heavily interested in drafting Sanders. Yeah, the probability of him dropping down to No.21 still remains a tough ask. But the Steelers are probably still hoping they can have a sniff at him once they are on the clock. However, he ain’t the only one scheduled to visit Steel City in the coming weeks.
Schefter also added that next week, the Steelers will host Syracuse QB Kyle McCord. Now, McCord could be an interesting choice if the Steelers aren’t too confident in drafting Sanders. Both of them were invited to the East-West Shrine Bowl in January. However, it was McCord who repeatedly stood out among the quarterbacks with his impressive accuracy and ball placement. As for Sanders, he was there just for attendance and interviews. He didn’t bother showcasing his skills to further solidify his draft stock that may have tanked a bit since then.

For McCord, the Shrine Bowl film isn’t the only edge he has over Sanders. He remains by far the best deep-ball thrower in this QB class. Last season, he completed 37 passes that went over 20 or more air yards. Those numbers led the nation, while Sanders has received some flak for his lack of deep ball capabilities. McCord also comes with a solid frame with 9 1/2 inch hands standing at 6-foot-3, 218 pounds. This has allowed him to move around in the pocket and avoid those sacks in the process.
In his only season with the Orange, McCord was sacked just 27 times. Meanwhile, Sanders, who is projected a top QB prospect miles ahead of McCord, was the most sacked QB last season (42). So, it will not be a surprise if the Steelers do end up taking McCord instead of Sanders. Now, moving away from the draft bit of things, let’s turn our attention back to Rodgers. He seems to have dropped a major hint on his NFL future with the Steelers still in his waiting room.
Aaron Rodgers skips Pat McAfee’s summon to cast a doubt on his Steelers rumors
On Wednesday night, Pat McAfee was hoping Aaron Rodgers would appear for his ‘Big Night Aht’ event. But to pile on everyone’s frustrations surrounding his future. Rodgers didn’t appear at the event that was coincidently held in Pittsburgh. Expectation was that Rodgers would appear and announce his intention to sign for the Steelers live on air. However, something like that didn’t occur. Instead, Rodgers bunked the show completely. “He’s not here,” McAfee announced to his audience shortly after the event began. Seeing Rodgers skip McAfee’s Show Pro Football Talk, Mike Florio has floated a theory.

He feels the 4-time NFL MVP is waiting to see whom the Steelers draft to announce his decision. Elsewhere, the Steelers team president, Art Rooney, has also claimed they are willing to wait for Rodgers a “little while longer” if that’s what he wants. Apart from Rooney, the Steelers’ head coach also said there’s no definitive timeline for signing Rodgers. This means the speculations of him ever draping black and gold will probably keep on going for the next few months.
Rodgers could also be waiting to see how JJ McCarthy’s trial by fire goes in the Vikings’ offseason. Once the Vikings clear their stance on McCarthy as their presumed starter this season. Maybe that’s the time Rodgers will finally commit to the Steelers. But right now, everything’s just a speculation; nothing’s concrete. Rodgers’ future still remains in doubt while the Steelers continue to ponder whom to draft in Wisconsin. As for the NFL community, they are probably waiting for these stories to reach their climax once and for all.
