When Mike Tomlin throws shade, you know stuff’s heating up in Pittsburgh’s QB room. With the Jets on deck this Sunday, everyone’s wondering who’s taking the snaps—Russell Wilson or Justin Fields? Let’s break it down.

NFL insider Adam Schefter got everyone splitting up when he tweeted, “Steelers HC Mike Tomlin said Russell Wilson is in consideration to start Sunday night’s game vs. the Jets.” Wilson was already cleared to play before Week 6, but Tomlin’s statement’s got everyone speculating that a switch could be in the works.

Despite the veteran QB’s experience, Tomlin ain’t handing him the starting gig just yet. He’s been pretty blunt about it, asserting, “Justin has been pretty good, we have been pretty good, but not to be confused with great.” Those words stung, especially when the Steelers’ HC pointed out that Fields’ legs are an X-factor Wilson doesn’t have. Translation? The 35-year-old might have the arm, but Fields has that dual-threat dynamo that’s been driving defenses crazy.

HC Tomlin’s stance comes as the State Buckeyes standout continues to impress in Wilson’s absence. Having taken over, Fields has led the team to 3-0 start—518 passing yards, two TDs, and one pick. He’s also completed a career-high 73.3 percent of his passes—a major leap from his time in Chicago.

When asked why he hasn’t named the 25-year-old the definitive starter, Tomlin kept it cryptic: “Because there’s no need… When Russ gets to an appropriate level of health, and I have a decision to make, I’ll make it.” The coach’s comments make it clear that Wilson’s return ain’t guaranteed to change the game plan immediately.

Justin Fields isn’t letting the hype get to him either. Having won over the Chargers, he shrugged off the praise: “I’m not really worried about that. I’m more so into proving myself right.”

One thing’s for sure—if Pittsburgh decides to move on from Russell Wilson, there are a few teams looking for a QB with his pedigree.

What’s your perspective on:

Is Russell Wilson the spark the Steelers need, or should Tomlin stick with Justin Fields?

Three teams where Russell Wilson might land

As the Steel City mulls over Wilson’s future, let’s take a look at where the veteran QB might land.

With QB Tua Tagovailoa sidelined due to yet another concussion (his third), the Phins have been stuck paddling with backups Tyler Huntley and Skyler Thompson. Miami’s just one win away from topping their division, but they need a strong arm to get them there—and Wilson could help provide that stability.

Gardner Minshew just got benched like last week’s leftovers, and Aidan O’Connell’s still proving he can handle the spotlight. But if Russ is there, he could team up with Davante Adams—and electrify the offense.

Will Levis is struggling to find his footing, and Tennessee’s staring down the barrel of a disastrous season. With only four TDs against six interceptions, they need a shake-up. Wilson could spark a revival and steer them away from the bottom of the standings.
