When Mike Tomlin grabbed the scissors this offseason, nobody expected Montravius Adams — the guy who was a quiet footnote in Aaron Rodgers’ Green Bay story — to be the next one out of the Steel City. But maybe you didn’t expect to hear his name because you didn’t even remember he was on the roster. Nonetheless, here we are. He’s the name on Schefter’s feed. Happens fast when you’re playing musical chairs in the trenches, right?
Now, if you’re squinting trying to remember Adams and Rodgers side-by-side in green and gold, don’t worry — you’re not alone. Technically, yeah, they were Packers teammates back in 2017. But Adams was a rookie D-lineman trying to earn his wings, and Rodgers was, well, busy breaking his collarbone in week 6.
So, yeah, there wasn’t a tearful jersey swap between Montravius and AR when the former left the Packers in 2020. Also, maybe because Rodgers was too busy cooking with his Adams… Davante Adams.

Still, the DT carved himself a real lane in the NFL — just not where it all started. After bouncing from Green Bay to New Orleans, he landed in Pittsburgh like a late-season Hail Mary in 2021. And for a hot minute, he stuck. Over 46 games, 21 starts, and one extremely humble sack later, Adams became a reliable piece on the Steelers’ defensive front. Solid. Not splashy. The kind of guy coaches call “a pro’s pro” — translation: no headlines, no headaches.
The #Steelers are releasing defensive tackle Montravius Adams, according to a report by Adam Schefter of ESPN.
Not entirely unexpected. Yahya Black made three nose tackles. Not gonna have three make the roster. Lets Adams find a softer landing spot. https://t.co/m4GiJHpmup

But NFL loyalty has the shelf life of unrefrigerated milk, and Pittsburgh’s been stocking up at D-tackle lately. Two fresh draft picks, Derrick Harmon and Yahya Black, just crashed the depth chart party. So Tomlin did what Tomlin does — he cut ties without blinking. Adams, 29, out. Youth movement, in. Sometimes it’s just business… even when it feels a little heartless.
And if you think the Steelers have finished moving players before training camp? Think again. The trench’s depth chart is the target. So, no one’s safe there. But on the other side of the ball? There’s the whole game of ‘Tag’ going on.
What’s your perspective on:
Is NFL loyalty dead when solid players like Adams are cut for unproven rookies?
Have an interesting take?
When will the Aaron Rodgers-Steelers saga end?
Alright, Steelers Nation, it feels like we’ve been sitting in the Aaron Rodgers Show for weeks now, doesn’t it? But finally, there’s daylight. Steelers owner Art Rooney II jumped on Steelers Nation Radio and didn’t dance around it. “He does want to come here,” Rooney said. That’s about as subtle as a goal-line stand at Heinz Field.

So, what’s the holdup? Timing, mostly. One source spilled that the move could pop early next week. Another chimed in with a classic shoulder shrug: “It will happen. Not sure when but it will.” Basically, everyone’s holding their breath because it can happen anytime now. I mean, at least, if all things do go according to the script. Plus, there’s also the almighty Pat McAfee’s claim that if Rodgers is going to play it’s going to be in Steel City. So, the combination of all of this has dragged out this saga.
And here’s another nugget: Rooney made it crystal clear — if Pittsburgh drafts a quarterback, it won’t be anyone you’ll see under center this season. Translation? It’s Mason Rudolph’s show until Rodgers rolls into town with his four MVPs… If he does.
Even head coach Mike Tomlin has been playing it cooler: “I’m not going to forecast the ifs and whens regarding not only him, but any other potential free agent.” But when Tomlin admits to “really productive talks,” you know it’s not just smoke — there’s real fire.

The signs are flashing louder, and the decibels are just increasing. Pittsburgh didn’t go quarterback in the first round — they snagged a defensive tackle instead. So, maybe Rodgers is coming. And if you’re still doubting, remember: Rodgers himself said he’s “open to anything and attached to nothing.” Now, if you want an AR-led offense or not, it’s a debate for another day. For now, it more or less feels like Rodgers’ Last Dance would be in Pittsburgh.
