There are all sorts of biases and random prejudices in the world we live in, even in places where you’d never expect them. And it’s not just about race; people also get judged based on how they look. And that can happen even after spending over 20 years in the system and being adorned by a Super Bowl ring. But who is facing this dilemma presently?
Albert Breer thinks Mike McCarthy might face some of this too. The Cowboys parting ways with McCarthy caught everyone by surprise. But hey, when you’ve got Jerry Jones as the owner, it’s not too shocking. The guy runs everything for the team. So now that Mike’s out looking for a new job, Albert Breer and Dan Patrick think he’ll probably go through the same thing Chiefs great coach Andy Reid did -people judging him based on how he looks, not fitting the ‘head coach’ image. “Andy Reid fought through this, where we looked at Andy Reid, and you’re like that looks like the Kool-Aid guy. He doesn’t look like a coach. And I think McCarthy is well the Optics,” said Dan Patrick.
Patrick and Albert Breer discussed the biases coaches face, especially when it comes to physical appearance. Albert said, “I just think the perception of McCarthy is kind of messed up. Put his resume next to Mike Tomlin’s, what’s the difference?” Host Dan Patrick chimed in saying, ‘I’ve said it before I think we just have this when we see Mike McCarthy it doesn’t scream head coach. Sean Payton, oh he looks like a head coach Mike Tomlin looks like a head coach.”

It doesn’t surprise us, does it? Prejudices, biases, and perceptions have always been there. But the real question is, can McCarthy rise above it like Andy Reid did?
Mike McCarthy set to interview with the Saints soon
Andy Reid is a perfect example of how someone can fight through all the biases and prove the doubters wrong. At first, people didn’t think he fit the head coach mold, but now, he’s regarded as one of the greatest in the league. Mike McCarthy’s in a similar position right now. He’s got a lot to prove, but he’s got the experience to back it up. Currently, Mike’s in talks with the Saints about their head coach position. Mike’s worked with GM Mickey Loomis before, so there’s already some good chemistry. If anyone can overcome the odds, it’s McCarthy.
So, the Saints are kind of leaning on familiar faces right now, especially with the snowstorm throwing a wrench in plans. They’re bringing back Anthony Weaver and trying to get Mike McCarthy in over the weekend (which seems like a good fit). McCarthy was originally eyeing the Bears HC position, but with Mickey Loomis and the current roster situation in New Orleans, it’s starting to make more sense. After all, McCarthy played a huge role in shaping Aaron Rodgers into the star QB we know today.

So, Albert Breer thinks that Mike McCarthy’s experience with Mickey Loomis could play a big role in his potential move to the Saints. McCarthy’s got the know-how to handle transitions, having done it with the Packers when they shifted from Favre to Rodgers. Loomis is probably looking for stability with an older roster, and McCarthy’s the guy who can help manage that.
