The Seahawks aren’t just dipping their toes into free agency—they’re cannonballing into it. Mike Macdonald, the second-year head coach, isn’t wasting time playing it safe. Nope. The man’s got a vision, and if the early buzz is any clue, it involves shaking things up in ways that might make even a reality show producer say, “Damn, that’s dramatic.”

In simple terms—MacDonald and the Seahawks literally dropped the biggest bomb of this NFL offseason. It looks like the Seattle team is competing with the Eagles—a competition of who’s going to release the most number of players at one time. The Eagles released a couple of players in the past few hours when they parted ways with the veteran CBs Darius Slay and James Bradberry. And the Seahawks? FOUR! Yeah, I’m not making this up.

The team recently announced that they’re parting ways with offensive tackle George Fant, defensive tackle Roy Robertson-Harris, Safety Rayshawn Jenkins, and outside linebacker Dre’Mont Jones. The decision came just a week ahead of the start of the free agency, which is set to begin on March 10. But why are the Seahawks making the moves right now?

Well, we can connect it with the 2025 NFL Scouting Combine. The team’s looking at some of the potential draft prospects. But the thing is, the Seattle team and the general manager John Schneider aren’t just evaluating the 40-yard dash or bench press reps. The Seahawks‘ setting the stage for the offseason moves. “We’re down here to figure out what the offseason’s going to look like, this is our start,” the GM said on Tuesday in Indianapolis.

And let’s not forget that as per Over The Cap, McDonald’s Seahawks are $5.2M over the salary cap in 2025. Yeah, you read that right. The Seattle team is one of the six teams in the red, but not by much. That means, cutting of key player were already on the cards for the team, considering the franchise is looking to clear some salary cap space ahead of the free agency.

Let’s take a look at the four key players released by Mike MacDonald’s team

The Seahawks signed the OT George Fant as an undrafted free agent back in 2020. After a brief stint with the Jets and the Texans, the Seahawks re-signed him as a free agent in the last season. The team signed him to provide tackle depth, and as an option to start at the right tackle at the beginning of the season. However, the guy suffered an injury in week 1 and was sidelined from the whole season after playing just two games.

As for Dre’Mont Jones, the Seattle signed him as a free agent a couple of years back. The guy played 34 games for the team in his two seasons while starting 16 in 2023 and seven games in the 2024 season. Jones finished his Seahawks stint with 8.5 sacks, 77 tackles, 12 tackles for loss and 25 quarterback hits in his two seasons with the team.

Moving forward with Rayshawn Jenkins, the team signed him last year as a free agent. The guy entered the 2024 season as a starting safety for the team alongside Julian Love. However, during the middle of the season, Jenkins suffered a hand injury and was put on injury reserve. He finished his only season with the team after starting nine games and recording 53 tackles, 2.0 sacks, and a 102-yard fumble return touchdown.

Last but not least, Mike Macdonald’s team traded for Robertson-Harris from the Jaguars last season. He appeared in 11 games, recording 13 tackles, one tackle for loss, one pass defensed and one quarterback hit. At the end of the day, the Seahawks are surely cooking something big in the offseason. And it wouldn’t be surprising if the team adds a few more twists. After all, the time is ticking.
