Mike Evans and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers decided to part ways after the two joined hands in 2014. Evans has been a Buccaneer through and through ever since he joined the NFL. The 5x Pro Bowler was on the brink of ending his old contract with the Bucs and restructuring a new one was potentially in place. However, things failed to pan out as the Bucs missed the deadline to sign their Super Bowl-winning WR again.
As a result of this, the Bucs failed to save about $7.4M for their 2024 salary cap. Now Mike Evans is a free agent officially and the WR needs to find a new home after his 5-year $82.5M contract has come to an end. Greg Auman and the hosts of Jay and Z show discussed the ramifications of Evans being a free agent.

The discussion started with Auman explaining the terms like “cap space” and “dead money” to the host of the show. The conversation then shifted to Baker Mayfield and Mike Evans’ contract ending with the Bucs. The Tampa Bay team didn’t reinstate either of these players’ contracts even though the deadline was this Monday for the same.

One of the reasons behind not signing Evans is the amount of dead cap that the Bucs must carry in 2024, 2025, and 2026. To pay Evans, the Bucs have been borrowing money from future cap space and now they are in a crunch. The conversation then moved to where the WR would fit perfectly in the foreseeable future. The hosts immediately ruled the Kansas City Chiefs out of the conversation.
Per Auman and the hosts of the show, the Chiefs let Tyreek Hill go and still won the Super Bowl without him. They still managed to appear in the playoffs. According to him, it doesn’t look like Patrick Mahomes is facing any issues in the WR department as the Chiefs rely on their defense heavily anyway.
Also, unless Travis Kelce decides to say goodbye to the Chiefs, the Kansas team probably considers him as an alternative in the receiving division. But we don’t see that happening. So where could Mike Evans potentially end up in 2024?
Greg Auman makes a case for Mike Evans’ next home
Per the sports reporter, Houston Texans makes the most sense for Evans as his next home. One of their starting WRs is a rookie and Noah Brown has more than half a decade of experience. So the addition of Evans would do wonders for CJ Stroud and help him win more games, due to the balance of experience that he brings to the mix. Even without a heavy wideout arsenal, CJ Stroud managed to take the team to the playoffs. Thus, adding Evans to the table would only create a more solid side.

Secondly, Evans is from Texas. After spending 10 seasons with the Buccaneers, it would be much better for him from a career and personal standpoint to return to his home team than anywhere else. Although teams like the Carolina Panthers, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Tennessee Titans are also in need of a wideout right now, and could probably seek out Mike Evans’ addition to their teams.
