The Jacksonville Jaguars are in turmoil after they lost 28-20 to the Tennessee Titans. There’s a lot of hiring and firing going on in the NFL and the walls are trickling down on the Head Coaches and the General Managers of every team. The wave started with the Raiders and now it has come to claim the jobs of other people. After losing to the Titans, Mike Caldwell seems to have come under the limelight.
Ian Rapoport tweeted out the recent developments in the Jacksonville Jaguars’ staff and it looks like they will be needing a new defensive coordinator soon. For now, the Jags can hope that they can find a good coaching staff, given that it might have become their next big priority.

Rapoport confirmed that the Jaguars have indeed parted ways with Mike Caldwell who was hired by the team in February 2022. His post said, “Sources: The #Jaguars have fired defensive coordinator Mike Caldwell and his staff.” Caldwell was the Jaguars’ DC for two years and worked under Doug Pederson. The Jags finished their season with a 9-8 record and are out of the playoffs.

The most probable reason for Caldwell getting laid off was due to the Jacksonville Jaguars losing 5 of their last 6 games; giving away at least 23 points to their opposition. In fact, this has made the team rank 22 in defense and 25 in scoring, per NFL. Interestingly, Patrick Reilly was the only defensive staffer who was spared firing.
The majority of the Jaguars’ defense was carried by the linebackers Josh Allen and Travon Walker, who combined for 27.5 sacks in 2023, and the rest of the teams combined for 12.5 sacks this season. Despite this, the Jaguars ranked 25 in sacks. The Jags gave away 327 yards of offense to the Tennessee Titans, a team that has had a bad record since the start of the season.
The team has a lot of holes in their defense and the HC Doug Pederson wasn’t afraid to admit the shortcomings.

HC Doug Pederson gets vocal
The head coach appeared in the media around Christmas and told them that the team had issues with missing the tackles and mentioned that the team should have done a better job at spotting opposing WRs and RBs. He expressed the same thing again after losing to the Tennessee Titans on SNF.

“The mistakes, the penalties, the turnovers, the missed tackles … those were all the things that hurt us down the stretch.” Said Pederson in a conversation with John Oehser, the Jaguars’ Senior Writer.
The fact that the RB’s Derrick Henry and Tyjae Spears managed to combine 178 rush yards over 22 attempts screams that the Eagles need a major overhaul on the defensive side of things. Maybe sacking Caldwell was the first step towards it.
