Bill Belichick left the Patriots, and the departure wasn’t all that friendly. After he left, Robert Kraft decided to release the first episode of the docuseries The Dynasty: New England Patriots. Some aspects of the project were funded by Kraft Dynasty LLC. However, Kraft reportedly didn’t have any creative control over the project. The documentary has garnered publicity from its “negativity” against Belichick and other players, while the narrative surrounding Tom Brady remained neutral.

As the series went on, it started attracting negative spotlight from some, including former Patriots players. It was somewhat reminiscent of what happened with ESPN’s The Last Dance, which had Michael Jordan in focus. The basketball documentary didn’t sit well with Scottie Pippen, who was vocal about his disappointment. Now, something similar is happening with Tom Brady and Bill Belichick’s former team and people are drawing comparisons between the two.

The series was not all peaches and cream. At times, it portrayed Bill Belichick in a very negative light, along with some other Patriots players. Those players included Devin McCourty, Rodney Harrison, Matthew Slater and even Julian Edelman. The NFL on NBC picked up the matter and chose to address the negativity behind it.

The hosts of the show were discussing how former Patriots members were talking smack about the organization. The host mentioned how Belichick sabotaged his own rapport over the year by appearing stiff and bold in the interviews. Even in the Patriots docuseries, the ex-HC did not look comfortable getting filmed. The “monosyllabic” answers from Belichick said it all.

Also, it’s speculated that the producers of the show wanted to keep the people hooked, so they portrayed more negative aspects of the team. The negativity gave the documentary a “human” element. The hosts compared the negativity to the response that The Last Dance got from some members of the Chicago Bulls. They praised Michael Jordan and underestimated the efforts of Scottie Pippen and all the other teammates, which made Pippen and Co. upset.

What’s weird about this documentary is that it focuses a lot on the Patriots’ negative issues over 20 years but doesn’t put anyone on the pedestal except Tom Brady. There aren’t any reported incidents of Brady getting any backlash. While no one took shots at Brady, there are people who are still upset after watching the documentary. Three episodes in, Robert Kraft felt like the directors should have focused on more positive aspects of the Patriots.

The Patriots owner Robert Kraft has regrets

The directors of the show were given access to the Pats’ archives. They were granted access to interview top Patriots players, including Rodney Harrison, whose footage was just used for a single dialogue in an episode, among countless others.

“I felt bad there were players who gave hours and hours of interviews and they felt only the negativity. People like Devin McCourty and Rodney Harrison and Matthew (Slater) – although I just heard quietly, they’ve all felt that way,” said Robert Kraft.

At the same time, the injustice and one-sided portrayal of Belichick remained unanswered. When Kraft was asked about the coach’s role he said, “Look, I’ll state this clearly: I feel so privileged that we had Bill here. We hope when he’s finished that we’re going to have a chance to honor him the way we will do with Tom Brady this year.”

Through all of this, Robert Kraft was upset that the directors didn’t focus on the multiple Super Bowl championships over the years and chose to show the Pats in a bad light. But regardless of Kraft’s assessment, the documentary has been getting a lot of publicity and is rated 8.4/10 on IMDB. Have you watched it?
