The New York Jets made a mistake! No, we’re not talking about the team’s three wins and eight losses, though that’s a major factor. Instead, we’re referring to the franchise’s decision to move forward with Aaron Rodgers-or at least, that’s what the 58-year-old NFL legend believes.
During a recent appearance at The Herd with Colin Cowherd show, NFL legend, and sports commentator Michael Irvin talked about the teams and the Jets’s issues. Discussing the team’s real problem, Irvin said, “The Jets, I said, messed up, when they tried to make Aaron Rodgers the main thing, instead of keeping their main thing as the main thing.”
His passionate rant continued, “They were primarily a running game, a running team that played great defense, that needed some guidance at quarterback, right, and that their fight was to go find the quarterback that can come in and make the few plays that they need.”

Irvin pointed out the Jets needed someone who could complement their established system, not someone who would take over the spotlight. And now, Irvin feels the Jets allowed Rodgers to impose his style of play, throwing the ball excessively to prove himself–rather than integrating him into their existing strategy.
In his view, this disrupted their balance and led to poor results, such as eight losses this season and a slip in the rankings, from top 3 to rank 7 (per FOX Sports).

Hence, the 58-year-old contrasted this with teams like the Pittsburgh Steelers, where the coach firmly establishes the team’s identity and expects players, even star quarterbacks, to fit into the system. By failing to do that, Irvin suggested the Jets lost control of their identity, as he said, “Aaron Rogers made the Jets join his stuff and now they are in disaster.”
So, the question is, after all these disasters, will the Jets continue to keep Rodgers their “main thing?”

What’s up with the Jets and Aaron Rodgers next year?
Earlier the Jets fired coach Robert Saleh just five games into the season, and now they have won only one game in six under interim coach Jeff Ulbrich. In addition, they parted ways with general manager Joe Douglas this week. Also, who can forget Mike Williams’ exit from the team?
All these are done for the sake of rebooting their team in the next season. Hence, it’s now interesting to see what actions the Jets take for Aaron Rodgers.

According to some reports, the four-time MVP might not like to be a part of the team rebuilding itself, especially given his age (40). Hence, as ESPN’s Kevin Seifert playfully stated on X, “Vikings have one QB under contract for 2025 and he has never played a down of regular-season NFL football. It’s happening,” it’s speculated that if Aaron Rodgers leaves the Jets, then only one team can pick him up, if they want to, and i.e. the Vikings as they have the quarterback signed until 2025.

But that’s likely just a story, as Minnesota might not want to shatter Rodgers for a replacement of a QB who is producing great results this season (8-2 in NFL standings).
