Micah Parsons will not shy away from talking sense. The offseason carousel is on. The Niners and the Commanders have done the first performance with Deebo Samuel‘s trade. The Commanders welcomed the veteran WR into their squad in exchange for a fifth-round pick. Deebo’s farewell video to the Niners is up, and his Niners teammates have sent their parting messages. And Jayden Daniels has given a small welcome to the new WR. The analysts are busy dissecting what this move by the Niners would cost them.

This had nothing to do with Micah Parsons or the Cowboys—until an editor covering the team posted something that the Cowboys’ linebacker felt needed correcting. The editor wrote on X: “The Dallas Cowboys gave up a fourth-round pick for Jonathan Mingo. The Washington Commanders gave up a fifth-round pick for Deebo Samuel.” Translation: Jerry Jones’s Cowboys traded a higher draft pick for a rookie wide receiver, while the Commanders acquired a veteran player by giving up only a fifth-round pick.

The Cowboys had acquired rookie Jonathan Mingo back in November in a trade with the Panthers. But Micah Parsons wasn’t having it. He responded with the facts, “Washington picked up almost $22 million on Deebo’s contract this year! This legit doesn’t correlate at all!” justifying his team’s decision.

What Parsons pointed out is that the Commanders didn’t simply get Deebo Samuel for a bargain fifth-round pick—they also took on nearly $22 million of his salary this season. Washington will cover $17 million of Samuel’s salary, plus additional costs.

In short, the Cowboys LB just made it clear that you can’t compare two trades based on draft picks alone. The Commanders are covering a large portion of Deebo’s salary, which is why the trade return wasn’t higher. Well, as Micah defends his team’s trade decisions, NFL audiences are curious about his contract extension with the team. The LB has asked for extension talks, but for now, it’s just been a ‘we will see‘ with no definitive answers.

Micah Parsons awaits extension talks

We will be selectively strategic and aggressive.” That’s what Cowboys CEO Stephen Jones had to say when asked about the team’s free agency and offseason approach. The Micah Parsons question has been looming over the NFL Combine, with reporters repeatedly digging for answers. I don’t know the exact timing of that, so I don’t want to get out over my skis there.. That’s the only answer they got from Stephens.

What’s your perspective on:

Did the Commanders make a smart move with Deebo, or are they overpaying for his contract?

Have an interesting take?

Micah, who still has a year left on his $17 million four-year deal, has been pushing for an extension. Last season, QB Dak Prescott and WR CeeDee Lamb were also offered extensions before they could hit free agency. Parsons, too, wants to lock in that security for his future. And now, the latest update comes from Brian Schottenheimer at the NFL Combine. “The business of the NFL has become so big, and again, (negotiating with Parsons) it’s a two-way street.”

So, even the new HC has not given any solid answers about the LB’s extension. “Micah is an elite young football player that has barely scratched the surface. There are negotiations, and sometimes those negotiations take time, [so] it’s our job to focus on the guys that are there. It’s part of the business,” Schottenheimer said at the NFL Combine.

So, for now, Cowboys Nation has been patiently waiting for Jerry Jones and the management to adopt a selectively aggressive strategy. What Parsons would do if the team doesn’t offer him an extension this year is also unknown. There has been nothing on exploring trade options yet. It’s all just a mystery for now. But with Jerry Jones, you never know when he’ll drop a bomb. And when he does, you know he tends to shake things up.
