Walk into an Ascension Coffee shop in Dallas, and you’ll see tall glass towers slowly brewing Japanese iced drip coffee. It takes 12 hours to filter before getting hit with nitrogen and served. A slow, careful process, right? Similarly, on the morning of January 7, that same kind of patience played out in a quiet corner of that coffee shop inside Hotel Crescent Court. Dallas Mavericks GM Nico Harrison and Lakers GM Rob Pelinka met with each other to have a delicate trade conversation. And then nearly a month later, the sports world was gobsmacked with the news – Luka Dončić was traded from Mavericks to Lakers for Anthony Davis. A move that no one saw coming, including the NFL world and Micah Parsons.
ESPN Radio invited the Dallas Cowboys’s star linebacker into the show. Micah Parsons, who has shown his talent consistently in the league, felt somewhat connected with Luka Dončić. Delighted on the opportunity, the host wasted no time in throwing a question related to the NBA’s biggest trade of the year to the 25-year-old NFL player.
To which, Micah Parsons stated, “Uh, man! I was destroyed, bro. I couldn’t believe it.” No doubt, Luka’s trade to a new team has shaken up the world leaving the fans pinching themselves to make sure they are not dreaming. Parsons faced the exact same situation upon hearing the news. Hence, he expressed, “It’s terrible how things can structure (based) on what happened. And you know, it kind of gives you a reality check for all players. You can’t let things get to you. You can’t think you are too high or too low…”

After this trade, it seems Micah Parsons is convinced that anything can happen with anyone’s contract. He was in disbelief that despite Dončić, being a five-time All-NBA First Team player, was traded to the Lakers. Luka Dončić led his team to the championship last year. Although they lost, the NBA star showed his potential to become the face of the NBA. Micah Parsons, being a Dallas player, wanted the NBA and NFL franchises to bring victory to the city together. The Cowboys’ linebacker drew some similarity out of it. He mentioned, “Honestly, bro, we were the same age. I felt like I would say he was getting the city spot. We could have done great things together.”
However, destiny had something else in mind, so all Parsons and fans are left with is to talk about the trade. Among the many theories being thrown about is the new management’s unwillingness to potentially offer Luka a super-max contract. Speaking of which, how can we forget that Micah Parsons too will be awaiting a huge payout from the Cowboys? After all, he is now acutely aware of putting himself first in this world of sports-business.
Will Dallas break the bank for Micah Parsons?
On June 9, 2021, Micah Parsons signed his four-year rookie contract with the Cowboys. Since then, he has been showing consistency in the America’s Team uniform. In four years, the linebacker became a two-time first-team All-Pro in addition to four Pro Bowl appearances. Now, it’s time for the Cowboys to repay him or risk losing him by next offseason after their $24 million 1-year option expires.

The market! Market values have now increased a lot. Ever since Nick Bosa received his five-year, $170 million contract, price tags have just gone up. Now, with Micah Parsons next in line, according to ESPN’s Dan Graziano, he might sign a record-breaking extension with the franchise worth around $180 million. Graziano also predicted that the LB would receive approx $125 million guaranteed over four seasons. That would be a huge deal! And if Micah Parsons gets this, he will become the highest-paid defender and the highest-paid non-quarterback in the league.

It remains to be seen when Jerry Jones will loosen the purse strings for him. If we look at history, we can’t ignore the fact that the Cowboys have a habit of delaying contracts. How are you feeling, Dallas sports fans?
