For the first time in his career, Tyreek Hill won’t be part of the NFL postseason. After two impressive years with the team, Hill turned in his worst season with the Dolphins, finishing with 959 yards and six touchdowns on 81 catches, with another low point coming against the Jets on Sunday. Not only, did Hill struggle throughout, but opted out of the final quarter of the game and created more chaos in the post-game conference.
The game against a beleaguered Jets presented Miami with a slim chance of making it to the postseason. They had to hope a few results go their way in order for them to extend their season, but first, they had to take care of business against the Jets. However, an underwhelming show meant a 32-20 defeat and the Dolphins falling below the .500 mark for the first time since the 2019 season.
Despite this disappointment, the talking point became Hill’s failure to turn up for the final quarter of the game. Even though the receiver insisted that the “coach kind of pulled me out,” HC Mike McDaniel had a different version of the story. “I was informed that he was unavailable, right before a drive. I was not informed that it was a new injury…there was guys on the field there were competing.” Hill’s actions have now drawn the attention of an elementary school teacher from Miami, who cited his example while giving a lesson to the students.

Mary Crippen, a school teacher and a Dolphins fan shared a video on X, with a long note for Tyreek Hill. In the video, Mary talked to her students about Tyreek’s actions in the last game, explaining how it was not ideal for him to leave a game while his teammates were battling it out.
Addressing the students, Cripped said, “Tyreek Hill, in the fourth quarter of the game, the game was not over, they were still playing, there was still time left on the clock, Tyreek Hill said, ‘Eh, I’m done.’ He took himself out. He left in the middle of the game, sat on the sidelines, didn’t tell the coach, ‘hey coach McDaniel my leg is really hurting, I would just really like to sit.’ He just literally took himself out of the game and was like ‘I’m done.’
What message does that send? And mind you he’s a captain on the team. You know what a captain is? A captain is supposed to be a leader. So one of your captains took themselves out of the game, what message does that send?” This drew a number of responses from the young students with one kid yelling out, “he shouldn’t be a captain.”
Entering the final quarter, the Jets were 18-6 ahead but there was plenty of time for the Dolphins to mount a comeback. The Dolphins trailed by two scores at the time and scored a touchdown on the drive to cut their deficit to five points. However, inspired by Aaron Rodgers, who threw a season-high four touchdown passes, the Jets were able to shut the door on Miami’s postseason hopes. Hill had been average in New York on Sunday, registering just two catches for 20 yards.
But his presence in the fourth quarter could have impacted the game, given that both teams ended up scoring 14 points each.
A Dolphins win would still have been moot since the Broncos dismantled a Chiefs team resting many of their key players. Perhaps, this was the reason, Hill withdrew late in the game. Crippen also brought this up in her session with the students.
“I’m assuming once he found out that they could no longer make the playoffs, he decided, ‘Pfft, done.’ You’re allowed to feel regardless if you think it’s right or wrong. What I don’t agree with is how he gave up on his team before the game was over,” Mary Crippen taught her students.
Dear @cheetah ,
You’re a superstar. You’re one of the best in the game. We’ve cheered for you, celebrated your incredible plays, and admired your speed and talent. But your actions in the fourth quarter left a mark on us.

In the caption, of the video, the teacher appreciated Hill’s contribution to the Dolphins but again criticized his way of handling things against the New York Jets. The teacher also gave props to the Bears and Panthers for playing their best, despite being out of postseason contention.
As if his in-game antics weren’t enough, Hill further stirred the pot with his post-game comments
Tyreek Hill indicates he wants out of Miami
Hill and the Dolphins restructured his contract before the season began, bringing the total guaranteed money on his five-year contract to $106.5 million. The receiver still has two years remaining on the extension he originally signed in 2022, but it looks like he has had enough.
“This is the first time I haven’t been in the playoffs. For me, I have to do what’s best for me and my family, if that’s here or wherever the case may be. I’m (going to) open that door for myself. I’m opening the door. I’m out, bro. It was great playing here, but at the end of the day, I’ve got to do what’s best for my career. … I’m too much of a competitor to be just out there.”
After recording consecutive seasons with at least 1,700 yards and 119 catches in his first two years with the team, this has been a disappointing season for him.
Hill remained sidelined during the Dolphins’ final two possessions of the game with Mike McDaniel confirming that Hill’s absence was not injury-related. The HC refused to address the questions about Hill’s future saying that he won’t respond to “emotion with emotion.”
“I’m not going to make a rash judgement on something that is a little bit cloudy in the heat of the moment for multiple reasons,” he said. “Clarity will be found and you do move forward with conviction as a football team. I look forward to having conversations with him this week.”
