“I’ll take some time to think about it.” That’s what the Rams‘ HC said on Matthew Stafford retirement rumors after the divisional-round loss. Well, at some point, this rumor was bound to surface, especially with the veteran QB now hitting 37. However, as per the inside reports, Stafford is expected to return to the Rams’ locker room in 2025. But let’s be real: his return isn’t certain yet, considering the organization is planning to trade their veteran players.
Yep, you read that right. For starters, the wide receiver Cooper Kupp, who is actually a good friend to Stafford, is most likely to play for another team next season. The reason? Well, the 31-year-old QB is set to cost the team $29.78 million in cap space in 2025. And if the same holds true for Stafford, there’s a chance he might not return to the Rams. But here’s the kicker: if the Rams decide to trade Stafford or the QB doesn’t want to play with them anymore, his wife, Kelly Stafford, is good with it.
The thing is, she wants respect for her husband. Yep, that’s what she stated on the latest episode of The Morning After Media Podcast. “Like right now, if you know the Rams decided that they wanted to trade him or Matthew decided he didn’t want to play for the Rams, I’m good,” she stated. “I honestly wasn’t planning on discussing this, but hell, why not? My husband like wants to win. He’s not gonna, he’s not trying to put a team in a bad situation.”

“If you’re catching my drift, you’re catching my drift. I will say that they’re trading away Cooper, I guess I’m just a little confused because we were one play away from going to the NFC Championship, and I think if we go, we win. I have to be the dog in this situation, being like I want the respect for him that he deserves.” Honestly, she’s not wrong. The guy has been a tough competitor ever since he kicked off his prof football career.
After spending over a decade with the Lions, Stafford was traded to the Rams, and guess what? The QB led the team to a Super Bowl glory after a two decades drought. Fast forward to this season, and the team’s looking to trade their veteran wide receiver—who knows, they might end up parting ways with Stafford too.
In his last four seasons with the Los Angeles team, the QB has recorded nearly 15,000 yards and racked up solid 95 touchdowns. His regular season track record? A solid 34-23 ever since he stepped up in the Rams’ jersey. And now’s the interesting part. Stafford led the Rams in postseason for three times in four years and had a track record of 5-2 with the team, and of course, a Super Bowl ring. That being said, looks like Kelly Stafford’s demands for her husband aren’t without merit.
Matthew Stafford’s Wife Reacts to Shocking WR’s Trade News
Just when the Rams’ fans were healing with their divisional round loss, the Rams’ veteran wide receiver Cooper Kupp dropped the final bomb. On Monday, the 31-year-old WR announced on Social Media that the Rams are seeking to trade him this coming off season. And looks like the news hit Kelly Stafford the hardest.
Right after the WR broke the news, Kelly re-shared the image of Kupp and his wife in her Instagram story with a caption, “People don’t understand what all you bring to the game. Beyond your insane talent. This one hurts.” On top of that, she also re-shared another pic of the couple from their Super Bowl LVI win. With their picture, Kelly posted a beautiful note for Kupp and his wife.
“Someone who welcomed me with open arms into this city, who can always make me smile, and constantly helps me realize what really matters. Dunno what this place is gonna look like without you. I dunno if I wanna find out.” But one question still remained unanswered. Why’s the sudden plot twist in the Rams’ locker room? Well, there are certain reasons why the team may trade Kupp.

For starters, Kupp isn’t cheap for the team and he’s definitely costing a fortune to the team. In 2025, his cap hit is $29.78M. And in 2026? It’s $27.33M that takes his two-year total to $57M. Now, that’s a lot of money for a WR who had one of the worst season of his career for the team.

On the other hand, his injuries have been one of the major issues. Ever since the Rams drafted him in 2017, Kupp missed almost one game in six of his eight seasons due to an injury. And in 2024 season? Well, he started the season fir and healthy and guess what? He suffered an ankle injury in week 2 and had to miss four games.
Last but not least, after their postseason exit, the head coach, Sean McVay, declared that the team is looking for versatility in the WR position. Though he didn’t mention Kupp’s name but his statement was enough to take the hint. That said, Matthew Stafford’s team is surely gonna be making headlines in the coming off season.
