Bears have suddenly found themselves in a mid-season slump, having lost three in a row. Although teams in the NFL can go through such a run once in a while. Scoring just 27 points over that timeline and no TDs in consecutive games is simply unacceptable. As Shane Waldron left Chicago after just 10 months in his position, head coach Matt Eberflus may have saved his job for now.
There were calls of Eberflus’ firing over the past few weeks, considering the way he set his team up. However, witnessing the Bears throw Waldron into the line of fire instead saw their former running back Matt Forte disagreeing with their decision on the Up & Adams show. “I think Eberflus was trying to save his own job… You don’t fire Shane, you just have a meeting with him. We need change how we’re calling these games, we need to change our approach.”

Well, it could be true, as Eberflus was the one who supposedly took the blame for their poor run. However, it’s Waldron who heads out of the door, as Eberflus called it a collective decision, “After evaluating our entire operation. I decided that it is in the best interest of our team to move in a different direction with the leadership of our offense. This decision was well-thought-out, one that was conducted deliberately and respectfully.” As for Waldron, he was just hired in January after spending three seasons in Seattle as their OC.

He leaves the Bears averaging just 277.6 yards per game. Their No.1 overall pick, Caleb Williams, has already been sacked 18 times over those three games. The Bears’ offense ranks 24th for points scored, 31st for yards per play, 30th for total yards and 28th for yards per carry. Now it’s time for their passing game coordinator, Thomas Brown, to sort this mess up. As Bears offensive players shared their thoughts on Waldron’s sudden dismissal.
DJ Moore and Keenan Allen on Shane Waldron’s dismissal
Seeing Waldron head out of Chicago was unexpected amid calls for Eberflus’ sacking. But there are a few concerns on the minds of their star receiver, DJ Moore, that could have led to Waldron’s dismissal, “I would say when we wanted to change a call, it’s probably a drive too late or if we wanted to make adjustments and we just wait until halftime to make it. So we don’t get the same look.” Well, Moore is nowhere to be contradicted, as the Bears have repeatedly struggled to make any comeback.

Even their veteran receiver Keenan Allen voiced his thoughts on Waldron’s firing, “I would say just probably he was too nice of a guy. I think during OTAs, training camp, he kind of fell into a trap of letting things go, not holding people accountable. Obviously, those things lead to a slippery slope.” Lasting only nine games in Chicago, Waldron’s time was an utter disappointment.
However, his dismissal may have helped Eberflus earn more time as he remains on the hot seat. But for how long does Eberflus save his job if the Bears don’t win right away? Well, we will soon find out as they find themselves struggling at the bottom of their division. With the clash against the Packers coming up next week, the Bears could fall further behind. Or turn it around on the back of changes in their coaching staff.
