HC Matt Eberflus is running out of time with the Chicago Bears, and it seems no clock in the world can help him. Especially not his poor clock management skills. Sunday’s Bears game against the Detroit Lions was painful to watch at the end. In the second half, the Bears had a slim chance of tying the game or even winning. And needless to say, a well-placed timeout could be their saving grace. But instead of doing so, HC Eberflus just let the clock run. And voila, the team was handed their sixth consecutive loss. So, does Eberflus think his job is safe despite the stumble? Well, his answer was a predictable mix of stoicism and cliché.
Bears fans did not feel very thankful by the end of the team’s Thanksgiving game. And rightly so. Yes, maybe the loss was more than just a poor play-calling. Even Eberflus was quick to defend his decisions post-game: “We’ve just got to do a better job together.” But the coach may be rethinking the “we” part of that sentence now after firing calls. Speaking to the media following the 23-20 loss, the HC was asked whether he was confident about job security. “This is the NFL. I know where it is. I’m just going to put my best foot forward. I’m going to get to work and keep grinding,” Eberflus said, according to a tweet by NFL reporter Mark Maske.

While he’s busy “grinding“, the team and Bears fans are left wondering whether Eberflus will be the one getting ground up in the process. This close loss is an eerie reminder of the Bears last loss to the Packers.
The team could have broken their six-year losing streak to the Green Bay Packers, but a last-minute decision (or the lack of one) sealed their loss. At the 3-second remaining mark, he decided to use the final timeout, which gave the team hardly any time to adjust. The Bears attempted a 46-yard field goal as time expired, which was blocked by the Packers.
Post-game, he defended his decision. Yeah, no surprises there.

Eberflus’ blunders keep piling up
Pretending the last two decisions by the HC were isolated incidents would be a fool’s thought. Eberflus’ 14-32 record is more than just a bad season; it screams mismanagement.
Let’s talk about one-score games, for example. Reports state he is now one of 221 NFL coaches who’ve coached at least 20 such games. And the sad part? His appalling 5-17 record in those games is the worst of the lot. Guess losing winnable games is just his thing. Per analytics, since 2022, the Bears have lost 6 games where they had an 80% win probability in the 2nd half. Sheesh.

In 2023, during a Week 6 game against the Commanders, the Bears lost 12-7 after a failed 4th-and-goal attempt. HC Eberflus had called for a rollout pass that fell short instead of just going for a safer play. You see the pattern here, right? That season, the Bears finished 7-10. Their defense allowed 379 points, which turned out to be 20th in the league. Let’s not forget here that he is, in fact, from a defensive background.
Coming back to 2024, the team is currently 0-4 on the coach’s challenges. But guess when was the last time Eberflus won a challenge? Warning: the answer may not surprise you. Well, it was back in November 2023 during the 9th Week of the season. Almost a year later, the Bears coach still has a difficult time calling challenges. Well, former coach at this point!
