Did the Giants make a colossal mistake with Daniel Jones, or was it a necessary move?

Daniel Jones and New York Giants owner John Mara have officially broken up. “Daniel came to see me this morning and asked if we would release him. “We mutually agreed that it would be best for him and for the team.” The team president announced this while confirming the broken marriage with the quarterback. This statement followed Jones’s brief, 90-second farewell, where he admitted he was “definitely not happy about it.” While the news brought relief to Jones’s critics, the abrupt termination of his contract has raised eyebrows and sparked debates among fans and analysts.

Among those analysts, one is NFL legend turned sportscaster, Mark Schlereth. The 58-year-old recently appeared in his The Stinkin Truth Podcast with Mark Schlereth and co-host Mike Evans. During their instant reaction session, the former guard questioned the team for why they paid Daniel Jones so heavily, despite knowing the real outcome. He recalled the team’s mistake by saying, “They just gave him $160 million. I mean didn’t they just make that decision that’s….you knew he couldn’t play before you gave him the money and you just (waited) that the Fairy Godmother would sprinkle fairy dust on his head and all of a sudden he could play right?

Counting Daniel Jones’s flaws, the exNFLer questioned John Mara’s mistakes, “like you’ve known he couldn’t play, you knew he didn’t make great decisions, you knew he red striped everybody, he eyed down his receivers, he threw too many picks, you knew all these things about him before you gave the money to him and yet you still gave the money to him, why? Because you were afraid, ‘oh, what if we make a mistake.’ Well now, how’s that mistake you’ve compounded the mistake” by cutting him off from the roster.

To explain his point further, Mark Schlereth compared this situation to the 49ers’s handling of Trey Lance. They admitted their mistake early and moved on, instead of doubling down and worsening the problem by giving an extension. Hence, Schlereth believes the Giants compounded their error and now find themselves without a quarterback, facing a weaker draft class.

Have an interesting take?

So, does that mean the game is over for John Mara’s team? Probably not! It is because, Schlereth predicted if we see today, the Giants might get the second pick in the draft class, and they would eventually choose Sheduer Sanders as their next quarterback after Daniel Jones. Then from there, something positive can be expected.

Daniel Jones’s replacement is responsible for the poor previous draft season?

Tom Pelissero did some cap math for the Giants earlier. He, on his official X account, stated, “Daniel Jones was due $30.5 million in 2025 with a $41.605M cap number. But the #Giants owe him no more cash beyond this season if they release (or trade) him before March 16, when $12M of his $23M injury guarantee would convert to a full guarantee. If they trade him, or cut him without a post-June 1 designation, they’d carry a $22.21 million dead cap hit in 2025. Savings on 2025 cap: $19.395M.” This means, now as the mutual breakup is done, Jones has lost some huge amount.

In the season, Jones was only able to complete with 216-of-341 (63.3%) completion rate, for 2,070 yards with just 8 passing touchdowns. And now that his era has ended, the Giants are likely to move with Tommy DeVito. DeVito, via USA Today, “holds a 64% career completion rate to go with 1,101 passing yards, eight passing touchdowns and three interceptions.” He too hasn’t given much success to the team, as last year, he was seen as the new face of the franchise.

That’s why FOX Sports’ NFL reporter Peter Schrager said, last year, Tommy DeVito won three games, they were meaningless in the end. He beat the Packers on Monday night and we had him and his agent and his dad doing the whole thing.” And the result is – the team hasn’t drafted any quarterback this year. Hence, the quarterback problem!
