Imagine you’re listening to David Kushner’s ‘Daylight’ music edit, with Aaron Rodgers‘ career highlights playing one by one on the screen. Sounds cool, doesn’t it? A heck of a lot cooler than the QB’s current position, at least. From being the Packers‘ HOF star to a confused quarterback who can’t decide which team he wants to play for, Aaron Rodgers’ NFL legacy is at a major crossroads right now. Despite all that, the Pittsburgh Steelers want the 41-year-old to be their leader. But hold on, there’s a new update involving Mike Tomlin and Rodgers, which has the power to end all talks and debates.
NFL reporters Nick Farabaugh and Donny Chedrick reported today that the Steelers are “extremely confident” they will sign Aaron Rodgers. And no wonder. Ever since rumors circulated that the Packers’ star wanted to join either the Vikings or the Steelers, the situation has evolved. As the Vikings door closed amid Kevin O’Connell‘s confidence in J.J. McCarthy, the Steelers became the firm favorites.

But it’s strange how fast things are changing. Just a couple of days ago, on March 31, the same reporter, Nick Farabaugh, said, “Art Rooney II says he didn’t envision the QB pursuit taking this long. When asked, Rooney said, ‘The team won’t wait forever for Rodgers, but will for a little while longer.’” And now, the Steelers are once again waiting for Rodgers. In fact, Rodgers seems to have a concrete interest in the Steelers now, having visited the franchise last Friday. He spent a good few hours talking to various personnel and even having a toss about with newly joined DK Metcalf.
Talking about Rodgers’ visit and future with the Steelers, Mike Tomlin said to the media during the annual meeting in Florida, “He came to visit last Friday. We had a really productive day.” The head coach also confirmed: “But I don’t have any new updates in terms of where the process is. We’ll see where it leads us.” Though we can’t deny that the official talks are ongoing for sure, how long this will take remains uncertain. In fact, Aaron is reportedly in no hurry to decide whether he wants to go with the Steelers or not.
Meanwhile, Mike Tomlin is also busy giving updates on his injured wide receiver, who was a third-round pick in the 2024 NFL draft. Let’s check out the rookie player’s status on the team and whether he’ll return or not.
Mike Tomlin, Roman Wilson’s uphill battle to return to the roster
Yes, we are talking about Roman Wilson, the College Football Playoff National Champion of 2023 and the Steelers’ third-round pick in last year’s draft. But it’s shocking that the 23-year-old has only played one game since joining the team. In his one appearance against the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 6 last year, he played only five snaps, gaining zero yards with zero receptions. Ankle injury caused team doctors to place him on IR on October 28. Since then, Roman Wilson has not returned to play a single game.
When discussing his return with Mike Tomlin, he only said, “He was healthy, but healthy and football readiness are two different things, to be quite honest with you. When you’re coming back from injury, you’re essentially getting on a moving train, which is the analogy I like to use.” But hold on, there’s more.

Here comes the uphill battle when the head coach said, “We’re talking about a guy who had very little NFL experience. He was healthy at the end of the year. He was working extremely hard in practice, but a real opportunity never presented itself due to the misfortune of others or because of what he did for himself to contribute.” But if Roman Wilson wants to prove his worth this season, the competition won’t only be with George Pickens. There’s a new WR in town—DK Metcalf. And according to Steelers reports, Roman Wilson will fight for the WR3 position, as Pickens and Metcalf have already locked down spots 1 and 2.

So, the problems seem never-ending for Roman Wilson since joining the pros. As Tomlin described, he now has to get on the moving train of the Steelers to showcase his worth and skills. But he’s young, and no champion was ever forged without some intense competition. Definitely not in the Steel City.
