Is Mac Jones really NFL material, or should the Patriots start looking for a new QB?

“Lmfaooooooo mac jones should not be in the NFL,” a fan’s comment echoed across social media platforms. It wasn’t long ago that Mac Jones was touted as the Patriots‘ post-Brady savior. Now, he’s become the punchline of a joke that spans two fanbase.

On Monday night, Jones made his regular-season debut for the Jacksonville Jaguars in a game that quickly turned into a nightmare. The Bills steamrolled the Jaguars 47-10, leaving Jacksonville fans shell-shocked and searching for answers. Jones’ cameo appearance only poured salt on the wound.

Just three plays into his Jaguars career, Jones fumbled the ball after being sacked by Javon Solomon. The Bills recovered deep in Jacksonville territory, setting up another touchdown. It was a moment that seemed to crystalize all the doubts and frustrations surrounding Jones’ NFL journey.

The stats tell a grim tale. Jones finished 5-of-8 for a measly 22 yards. No touchdowns. No interceptions. Just a fumble and a whole lot of questions. It’s a far cry from his Pro Bowl rookie season in 2021 when he threw for 3,801 yards and 22 touchdowns.

“Honestly I think the patriots should be happy with there offensive line because atleast it’s not Jacksonvilles” quipped a fan. This was followed by fan reactions from both camps which were swift and merciless. “Buddy still has cement buckets for feet I see,” one commenter quipped, highlighting Jones’ lack of mobility. Another mused, “And I thought the patriots oline was bad I guess there’s another level to horrible,” managing to roast both Jones and the Jaguars’ offensive line in one fell swoop.

Jaguars in crisis and on the brink of collapse

The Mac Jones debacle is just the tip of the iceberg for Jacksonville. The team now sits at 0-3, a start they haven’t experienced since the ill-fated Urban Meyer era back in 2021. The blowout loss to Buffalo exposed glaring weaknesses on both sides of the ball.

The team’s franchise quarterback Trevor Lawrence also seemed helpless and futile. In 38 attempts he only completed 21 passes for 178 yards; he and his offense managed but a lone score without even managing another touchdown themselves. It has to be a disappointment to all in Jacksonville after selecting him as first overall draft choice just two years ago.

After the game, Head Coach Doug Pederson voiced his opinion with characteristic candor. “There have to be changes,” he declares flatly. “Whether it’s personnel, play design, everything’s on the table. Let’s call it.” In this way, the statement went through both locker room and front office like a thunderbolt.

The decision to bring in Jones now looks questionable at best. What were they trying to accomplish anyway? Was it a humiliation for Lawrence? A misplaced fire-starting job he got wrong? Whatever logic might be behind this plan, it’s failed miserably. One fan tweeted this, “Omg, why would Bill make Mac Jones get stripped there smh……”; ironically the implication being that even Bill Belichick could not save him from such a fate
