Louis Rees-Zammit’s shift of sports has drawn all eyes to him. The spotlight burns bright, and the expectations soar sky-high. But lurking in the shadows is a pivotal figure – his big brother Taylor – whose own journey took just as many twists and turns, yet ultimately ran parallel through the goalposts of life.
If Hustle had a name, it would be Taylor Rees-Zammit. However, it’s his relentless cheerleading for Louis that solidifies his status as the ultimate motivator, channeling the essence of that classic line from ‘Rocky’: “It ain’t about how hard you hit, it’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward.”
While Louis was busy becoming a mundial phenomenon on rugby pitches, Taylor was quietly putting in the work of his own. His athletic journey was more herky-jerky than a running back finding daylight. He first laced up for Malta’s national rugby squad instead of Louis’ team Wales, thanks to granddad Joseph Zammit’s Mediterranean roots.

“I thoroughly enjoyed it. They are such a good group of lads,” Taylor said after making his international debut. He packed down at No. 8 in a 24-10 win over Slovenia back in 2021. It was the island nation’s first match in over two years due to Covid. Taylor scored over a 50-meter wonder try against Slovenia that had teammates dubbing him ‘Rees-Lightning’ too. When he wasn’t rucking for Malta, he was a dedicated member of Cardiff’s Llandaff RFC, balancing club duties with his unyielding attendance of Louis’ games.

Maybe it was all those rucks making him crave a boardroom. After hanging up the cleats, Taylor cold-turkeyed into the finance world, calling clients for a wealth management firm, per his LinkedIn profile. Outside the office, Taylor’s competitive edge still burns bright as a proud member of Newport City FC’s defense, sharing in 12 goals from 72 games during the 2022 season. Born on October 18, 1996, Taylor embodies the spirit of Newport, repping it ferociously. Just like his world-famous sibling Louis, Taylor Rees-Zammit has carved his path to success through sheer grit and an unstoppable drive.
A brother’s relentless backing through all challenges!
Yet, despite all this, Taylor’s most impressive Hail Mary had nothing to do with finance or semi-pro footy. His true calling? Bona fide hype man and cheerleader-in-chief for Louis’ out-of-nowhere NFL gambit. When the youngblood shocked the sporting world by signing with the Kansas City Chiefs this week, Taylor showed up to support him like no other.

“They are my number one support, they mean everything to me,” Louis said about his family’s backing. “They are a big motivation why I play the game as well. They are everywhere I go.” From trekking across the pond to catching Louis’ stateside workouts to planning Chiefs’ jersey pre-orders, this was full-tilt bodying. “We’ll all make it, brah!” could’ve been the battle cry as Taylor darted airports trying to not miss a single rep.

So as Louis ground away at the International Player Pathway, handling pro day drills and team visits with a cool Kobe focus, Taylor made sure not an ounce of support went untapped. Only a few realize the emotional hurdles Louis has vaulted. Just as he was discovering that killer mentality, the heavyweight blows of losing two beloved grandparents threatened to derail it all. “RIP Nany June. I love you so much. Heaven has gained the most caring woman,” Louis wrote after his grandmother’s passing.

But buoyed by his family’s supernatural basement of hype, led by his older brother, Louis turned tragedy into triumph. “Trip to Kansas sorted then! Better order my LRZ chiefs jersey,” Louis’ former teammate Josh Adams said. Undoubtedly, a situation of entry into the NFL to remember for ages.
