Will Aaron Rodgers' stint with the Jets be a repeat of Russell Wilson's Broncos disaster?

Is Rodgers rolling off the Jets’ dice? Dan Orlovsky has thrown some cold water on the New York Jets and their Aaron Rodgers gamble. The ESPN analyst warned that if the Jets don’t make a championship run during the four-time MVP’s tenure, this trade could go down as one of the ‘worst in NFL history.’

“If this doesn’t go well for the Jets, it might be one of the worst trades in NFL history,” Orlovsky declared in a tweet shared by First Take. “The Jets traded for a guy who was a two-out-of-three-year MVP-winning QB.” The New York team made a bold move acquiring Rodgers, signaling their GM Joe Douglas’ belief that they were ‘just a QB away’ from Super Bowl contention.

Analyst Orlovsky drew parallels to Russell Wilson’s Sept. 2022 trade—a fourth-round draft pick that’s been a colossal failure for the Broncos. He highlighted, “I compare it to Russell Wilson’s Broncos trade. It is one of the worst trades in the history of the NFL.” Denver paid Wilson before they had to, signing him on a five-year, $242.6M contract extension. However, the new Steelers’ QB failed to make the playoffs in both Denver seasons. Broncos’ HC Sean Payton benched Wilson with two games left in 2023, bringing a dramatic end to his Denver stint.

On the contrary, the Jets were all-in on Rodgers, giving up significant draft capital with $75M fully guaranteed to acquire him. With a stout defense anchored by Sauce Gardner, Quinnen Williams, and a rising star in Garrett Wilson, the stage has seemingly been set for the NYJ team’s championship run. In the First Take Twitter clip, the ESPN analyst wrapped up his debate: “With one of the best defenses that the Jets have, if this season doesn’t go well, we’d be wasting some of the great young talents here.”

But again, Dan Orlovsky is bullish on A-Rod’s potential. “I think Aaron is going to pick up very similar to what he was in 2020 and ’21, is that MVP type of season,” he said on the Pat McAfee Show. A healthy Rodgers plus the Jets’ talent could make them a powerhouse. But here’s the kicker: if injuries strike or Rodgers doesn’t hit MVP form, this trade could haunt the Jets for years.

The pressure’s on for A-Rod, especially with his frustration mounting over the Jets’ offense stalling during training camp.

Rodgers loses his cool amid Jets’ offensive woes

Have an interesting take?

Aaron Rodgers is feeling the heat as the NYJ navigates training camp. From offensive line fumbles to wayward snaps, Rodgers is facing some serious hurdles. His fiery reactions are making waves, with teammates like Tyler Conklin noting his intense expectations.

“Yeah, it was a little frustrating,” the Jets’ TE Conklin said. “But I think having someone who’s going to hold everybody accountable at all times, no matter what… that’s not something every team has.” Praising Aaron Rodgers’ sharp football mind, the tight end announced, “He’s kind of like the Oppenheimer of football.”

Another source of frustration for the four-time MVP is those high snaps from center Joe Tippmann during camp. Tippmann stepped in for Connor McGovern after the veteran starter was hurt in Week 7. Even Jets’ HC Robert Saleh agreed to it, stating, “Tippmann’s got to work on it. There’s clearly something going on. He’ll get it down. He snapped for us last year, so he’ll be fine.”

With the season fast approaching, the Jets need to get their act together pronto if they’re aiming for that Super Bowl shine!
